There are quite a few nerves in your feet and toes, to help with walking obviously.
The odd thing is the nerves in your big toe connected to the nail seem to stimulate a group of nerves on your stomach somwhere, well this is what i have experienced in the past it might be me malfunctioning.
EDIT: You've also got to think of the energy that is going into your toe, you leg swinging at a reasonable speed......try punching a wall with your index finger extended, it will be near the same energy and will hurt much......your finger will prob break, lol
