Stuck In Cave, Elevator?

I am stuck in a cave room with the huge honeycombs on the far wall as you walk in, the elevator at the rear left, and the vortigaunt above the elevator waiting for you to meet him up there. I just can not figure out how to get the elevator to work! I have tried everything I could see around me to try to help for hours to no avail. Can someone please tell me how to go up the elevator?

look for the missing gear directly behind the 2nd picture there (in the water), and you don't go up the elevator then, the vort comes down to help you.
