Stuck in Route Kanal (possible spoiler)

I'm currently stuck in the area where there were:

1) The floor is mostly grating... it's a kinda open room.
2) There are explosive barrels everywhere
3) There is a water level below the grate (ladder access)
4) A bunch of man hacks come flying out of a vent across the room up high.
5) There is a tall pipe room with closed water gates which has no visible exit.
6) There is a high up tunnel underneath the floor in the water area below the grating.

I tried piling barrels and stuff in the water and after much frustration and failure I decided to just ask here if I'm on the right track of if anyone has a tip. I just want to get onto the killing, I hate problem solving.

BTW, sometimes the physics are so realistic in this game that it's actually frustrating! Like stacking barrels and trying to climb them.

Climb the ladder to the top, turn around jump on to the pipe, walk along to the upper walkway, go through to the other room. Head straight on and jump down carefully, at the bottom near the water is a valve, turn this and the room will flood. Now return to the other room, don't drown. You will be able to go through the tunnel which was previously too high to jump to.

I'm stuck on the next bit (didn't have much time as had to leave for work. There is a flooded room with some boxes nailed down by planks, you can break the planks and get the boxes to float but I can't seem to use them as stepping stones like I want to

How does one do this bit?

you need to use the big cable-drums(sp?) break all the boards to get the to surface...

Haha, thanks Matblack. I also spent literally hours trying to stack barrels to get out of here. I was trying to stack them high enough to get to the vent that the man hacks come out of. I looked in the other room 20 times and didn't see that valve, even though it seemed like raising the water was the best move. I tried raising the water by dropping all the barrels into it but that didn't work either (I even killed all the man hacks without exploding any barrels so I'd have more barrels left).

I hate "cheating" and finding a solution online but I gave this one all I had!

And Matblack, yeah, you want to use the cable drums more than the boxes. Hopefully that should get you across.

My friend actually managed to STACK the barrels and get across!

I figured the valve thing out, being an all knowing genius, of course.

Haha, my father did also that barrel stacking on that level!
He sure have heard enough of that from me, lol!
Well, I´m not sure if its so logical to hidden a valve among the pipes like that..oh well

And I though it was impossible to get stuck in this game
