I'd say that the Combine pulse guns use the same tech. If you look at the impact of a strider's bullet you'll see the white flakes coming off it IIRC.
 
Exactly. And not to also mention that when you point one of those energy spheres towards an enemy and pull the trigger... the enemy disentigrates by the law of momentum conservation and some unexplainable theoretics with that. Ehem, my only question about the whole disentigration process is: Why does it always stop after their shoes? Anything (including the floor and surrounding air molecules) would be swallowed and converted to another form of energy. Hehe, questions.

When you boil water the container gets heated, but not to the same extent. Because the floor and air aren't an extension of the soldier's body, they aren't affected as much as the body itself.
