Takes forever to start?!

Anyone else have to wait at least 10 mins for HL2 to start up from clicking the icon?, My PC is double the minimum spec but seems to take forever to "verify" files when starting a new game...

What exactly happens? I don't get any verifying files message, it just starts the game (takes about a minute I'd guess). Sounds like a Steam problem.

Mine did seem to do some random verifying crap the other day though...

I has verified three times to me. The first time was the first time and the other was a week after, and the third the day after the second. After that I haven't had any trouble.

I think the re-verifications are part of new Valve attempts to get pirates. As they learn of the new pirated versions, they update their verification checks.

That makes sense, but then some of us have never been re-verified. You think it's just random?

I think you are probably right.

I wonder if it loads quicker in offline mode?

Not really, its gonna be slow, there's a lot of stuff in a map to load

You could though edit some file to stop the game loading the background maps used at startup, that will speed things up a little more.

It's not been doing it recently, but since i got it untill about 2 days ago, yeah, its been doing that verifying crap every time i tried to play, and not been speedy about it...

And by not being speedy, i mean its taken about 15mins just to verify :hmph:

Maybe theres somthing goin on with your pc..

Have you done anything lately or downloaded anything.?

I think figured out why it re-verifies files at some point, but now I've forgotten again... doh!

Make sure steam closes down properly though, I know sometimes when I reboot/shutdown it doesn't close fast enough for windows and this can cause problems.
