Just got the game and I must say it is one of the better strategy games I have played, it is a significant upgrade from the first one with most (if not all) balancing problems fixed from what I have seen.
The war of the ring mode is a fun addition, it makes it feel a lot like a total war game in a fantasy setting. Though you can build structures, train soliders and heroes in a battle (if that is an advantage or disadvantage I will let you decide). You can build structures and train units outside battles as well.
The sides are reasonably diverse (not starcraft diverse mind you) but some are a little overfed with heroes while some have a wee bit to few (goblins for example has 3 heroes while elves has 7 (IIRC)). I have not actually seen a problem with this though.
The hero customizer was a nice addition, may only complaint is that there are not enough parts for the look of the heroes.
The powers are very nice, the most powerful ones have such a significant recharge time that they are balanced.
