HL2 is far from bug free... feel free to post your bugs and/or solutions to them...

So far I've come over one major bug... the attached screenshot is what happens after a bout 2 mins or playing on high textures (I've set it to medium now, no more problems)

Also, does anyone know any usefull command lines? like heapsize n stuff? and with usefull I mean that they actually improve something :p

That screenshot seems to indicate your card is overheating. Are you overclocking it? Texture corruption like that is usually a sign your GPU is frying.

I came across a bug that gave me a chuckle. The attached screenshot is kind of dark, but if you look carefully you'll realize a huge plank of wood has gone through the character model.

No, no overclocking.. just a radeon 9600 pro... not even AA on or anything, it should be capable of handling it without too much heat...
and its only on high textures, not on medium :/

Oh well :p

Try using your sensoral abilities... In other words, turn the computer off when that starts to happen and put your hand on the videocard. Might be problems with your cooling system.

i got a 9600 pro too. i got no problems. update ur graphics driver to the latest catalyst. thats what i did before playing and i got no problems.

edit: of course, make sure you have the latest drivers first, try the official drivers from www.ati.com

Delta, just test if you have this in another game. If you don't have another game, download 3dMark, it's full of heavy textures. If you see glitches anywhere else, it's your graphic card.

Texture corruption like you have look a lot like overheating graphic memory.

If you don't have this problem anywhere else, I suggest you delete your hl2 folder, start hl2 up again, so steam must rebuild it from the cache. Maybe something went wrong with your install after all then.

Other than that, I'm lost.

I found a nice one near the beginning a combine falls into a canal and end up below a floating piece of wood, yet there is a shadow being cast on the wood!

Incidentally, anyone has a problem using fixed position guns? During one part of Kanal Route (Route Kanal??) I was unable to use two such guns using the '"E" key, yet the strategy guide says you can (P86). Later on in the same level I found two more which worked fine!

Oh, one more. I was grabbed by a barnacle and shot it just beore it began to devour me, yet it did not let me go. After a few minutes of bashing/shooting/shouting I gave up and reloaded.

I believe the problem is to do with the shader (only appears on certain surfaces), I see exactly the same kind of thing. If you go into the graphics settings and change something, thus resetting the graphics system, it starts working again. Then slowly it returns....

As yet there is no sure-fire solution, but people are using different drivers and all sorts of other things to try and solve it. Does changing to medium textures make a real difference to the image quality?

If not try moving the Hardware Acceleration slider in Windows XP down a notch, that often cures things? Do you know if the AGP Write or Fast Write is set on in the Catalyst Control Center?

I cant believe that it is overheating as it happened to me as soon as I started, and always happens to the same textures at the same time even after a reboot and rest.

In one point a striders legs were sticking through the wall REALLY badly. It actually almost stepped on me when I was on a level about 10 feet lower than the rest of it's legs.

Not so much a bug, well, sort of. If you put a box in the water and try and climb up onto it, occasionally you go rocketing really high into the air. Annoying and disorientating. Once I actually went high enough to take some fall damage when landing on a nearby hard surface.

I have the new beta drivers and I don't have the problem anywhere else. I mnight try the rebuilding thing.. thanks for your help :)

I didn't notice much change with the texture quality to medium.. I guess it's the shaders indeed, as it only seems to happen to surfaces that might be reflective/shiny and that kind of thing.

And I don't know about AGP write stuff :p

the bin just shakes violently over his head and hes like. "Did you knock?"

:D

It's a shame you can't kill most of the story people tho :p

Wow, that looks like Esher :p

Er excuse me, didn't I say that if I moved slightly, the flames corrected themselves? Thats definitely a bug.

I got a bug where I got the rubber tire stuck in mid air next to the cliff when you try out the gravti gun thing first time.

small reflection bug. no big deal doesn't affect gameplay bug it was enough for me to notice.

Delta, mine is doing the exact same thing - I can play Doom 3, etc. just fine without this problem. I've got an AMD 64 / 9800 Pro .

Let me know if you figure it out - I'm going to try some things too.

In this case, the bug is not in the game but in ATI's infamously shitty drivers.

Till now i've found severel bugs... some are serious and some are minor...

-I got stuck to a wall... at the first chapter in the hotel... I just jumped on a box and then i coudn't move... after a min i simply use the noclip command to get free....

-At the air-boat sequence, there was a place where the combine were throwing exploding barrels at me... at my first attempt i died...
at my second attempt i've tried to shoot them from a far place to make it easier... but instead of firing back or taking cover they just stood there...
Just shows the "great" AI at action...

-sometimes after i destroy a manhack i can still see sparks as if there is another manhack that creates them... i can also hear the sound of it... it happens quite frequently... and it's really annoying because you never know if there really more manhacks out there are just the "ghost" of a manhack...

Besides all of those, there is another "bug" but it's a really fun one...
If you try to run and jump all the time, you can go faster than running with sprint... you can go even faster if you sprint and jump...
It's not like bunny-hopping, you simply press the jump key all the time...
It came really helpfull in Ravenholm when I've ran out of ammo...
I was able to go pass all the zombies while giving a few hits with the crowbar from time to time....

I found a new way to get out of city 17, who needs their teleporter or the underground train network when you can simpily do this:

The secret way out

that was near the beginning, when you swim through the underground tunnels just after that huge rotating thingy (the one that looks like it stirs the water, and possibly filters out garbage)

I've got the crazy texture problem too. I really doubt it's an overheating problem because I've NEVER had a graphical glitch in any other game.
