Wasnt there meant to be a level on an old Ice breaker?
And I liked the look of the level in the e3 trailer on the boardwalks with zombies...

Great game tho...

In the process of any game's development some stuff is cut or changed to help gameplay. The Ice Breaker is no longer in the game as a result.

Yeah originally the plan was you arrive on the ice breaker but they changed it to the train scene.

I suppose the symbology of arriving in an ice breaker would have been a little cooler.

Symbology? ...The word I believe you're looking for is "symbolism".

Icereaker would be really cool as a level. But arriving on a train is better. HL1 began on train and ended on a train. HL2 began on a train and at the end G-man makes some interesting comments.... Not to spoil anything...

But i swear the day before unlocking, gamespot said a location was set on an ice breaker?
bah nvm.

You originally started the game on an icebreaker called the Borealis which was taking you to an undersea base in the Arctic called Kracken Base that was run by Mossman. This was scrapped because it's kind of silly that a rag-tag rebel group would have the wherewithall to construct an undersea base in the Arctic!

This was wwwaaaaayyyy back in 2002 and the game changed significantly since then.

I think its better that Half Life 2 started off on a train as a reference to the first game, though I've seen pictures of the Ice Breaker and it looked pretty awesome. Perhaps they could use it for the opening of Half Life 3, or an expansion pack or something? It would be very cool if they could salvage it from the cutting room floor.

Actually, it wasnt just goign to be the start sequence, when they changed that to a train ride they kept it in as it took you to kraken base..it shows the entire route through the game in the Raising thebar book...(the old route through)

the biggest problem with half life 2 was giving us so much info during devolpment. If we didnt know that something existed, we wouldnt miss it when it was cut

I feel bad for all those fans of Half-lifee(extra e) that were on the boat that helped valve out in accurately designing the ship, who's efforts had all been in vain.

Only the OICW and the Hydra were cut after we'd seen them. The Icebreaker consisted of one screenshot.

One screenshot, but MUCH info on how valve talked and socialized with the Half-life fans aboard that helped inspire and make sure it was modelled accurately down to some of the smallest details.

Where was that?

Still, it's to be expected when you follow a games development. Cut stuff is not as bad a problem as people make it out to be. I keep reading posts talking about guns that were cut like "I can't believe Valve cut the sniper rifle, they shouldn't have shown us it" when Valve never, ever showed a sniper rifle in any screenshot or video.

The problem is Feath is that so many people got hold of the leak that they came to expect that everything that would be in the leak would be in the finished game itself.

From what I understand, the leak had something like 40 different weapons and dozens of maps that would NEVER have made it into the final product in the first place - and people just natually assumed they would all be there, not realizing that there was no way that would happen.

Furthermore, some are not realizing that what we saw in the 2003 E3 Binks were merely "proof of concept" demos showing both the potential of Half-Life 2 and the Source engine rather than actual gameplay itself. On the other hand, the 2004 E3 Binks really do show the final product.

I guess it's unfortunate that people watched the Binks so many times that they expected it to be exactly like what they saw.

hahahaha I'll be the second to say "Boondock Saints!"

What a great movie, nice work.

Where was that?

they had done the entire level, i have a very old preview of the game here and it mentions going onto an icebreaker to fight there way to the engine room passing blazing fires and fighting off metal skeletions with a laser attack.

This was also in the leak i believe

They were Stalkers. There isn't anything called a Prowler in the game.

Oh yeah, the prowlers? Too bad those got cut :|

What were the Prowlers? The piece of concept art called a "Prowler" was called the Assassin in Raising the Bar. And it wasn't cut, it was changed into the fast Zombie.

Some people also called those skulking, almost lifeless skinny humanoids prowlers in the citadel too.

The players did, not anybody in game.

Lesson nr1:
Dont get leaks 'cause those might be work in progress! :p
