Looks like we won't be getting the deluge of new content some of you suspected. The mythical "ATI levels" and "The Lost Coast" are indeed one in the same.

I put this in the "Valve Info Thread" but since nobody really looks in there anymore, I thought I'd just let you guys know.

My original email to Gabe:

Hi Gabe, I've been a devotee of yours since you guys since you shocked the world with Half-Life.
I wanted to just say congratulations on actually upping the ante with Half-Life 2. I can't believe you did it -- but you did.

Anyway, quick question:
Is "The Lost Coast" simply the formal title given to the so-called "ATI levels" you talked about a while back?
Or are they two different beasts entirely?

Thanks for your time.

Response from Gabe after about 2 minutes:

uhh... wasn't this already confirmed? O well, nice to have more comfirmation, anyway. gj!

Oh, was it? The reason I emailed Gabe was due to some confusion in another thread about it.

Yeah I was thinking about it, but then I probably wouldn't have gotten a reply at all.

true, well atleast we know know that the lvls are infact the lost coast and the extra features are hdr

Thought it was pretty obvious, HDR is by definition high end.

It was never specified whether or not the ATI levels were a single episode or an ongoing release. For all we know, this could be the first of many ATI levels. I remember in "Raising the Bar," it was certainly level(s) (plural emphasized), and the name (ATI level(s)) tends to imply more than one.

We can only hope...

Gabe what an ass whoa he can reply with one post thats so cool not really >:(.

Ahh.. I see... good then

One feature that we'll be adding to the Source engine in the coming months is high dynamic range lighting. To showcase this we've taken a part of the Highway 17 chapter of Half-Life 2 and worked it into a single level that incorporates HDR along with some new gameplay. We're calling this short level "The Lost Coast," and it will be made available free of charge to Half-Life 2 customers that meet a specific set of high end hardware requirements. We'll be publishing those requirements soon.

SO...what are the requirements?

Well, good though. I mean if the ATI levels are the same as the unreleased HDR lighting levels, then we should see a lot of improvement with one of the things that some of us found lacking with the game, namely the lighting. Everything else was good, but some improved lighting should make it SVEET.

Lately, about whether the Duke will be able to urinate in DNF...

Alex Garden of Homeworld fame has been known to respond and even play his own game online.

Alright! Sorry, my bad. Delete!

Just trying to help out with the ol' HL2.NET info machine.
No dont delete, alot of ppl dont have the time to read through ALL the threads and ALL the posts on this forum so they wont find a little post somewhere in some weird thread. So I think its fine with a thread dedicated to the topic, even starting off with a mail from VALVe (Gabe) is perfect, I for one did not know that there would only be one map.

Thank you DarkStar :)

nice going nerd!
There is absolutely no need to say that. He is obviously a bit of a "newbie" so you should better help him.

The answer is: "Yes"

Do you guys think that the Loast Coast will contain any new story-type material?

Maybe like and appearance by Alyx or Barney?

Love it if it did; bit unfair on the guys with sucking rigs, tho', they'd never get to see it.

Stuff about where the Antlions came from would be nice, or checking out a huge rebel base

It would be sweet if you had to mount some sort of defense of a huge rebel base. Maybe with Alyx or Barney as backup.

You're a dick...there I said it. :dozey:

If they do release new story elements in the Lost Coast levels it wouldn't surprise me to see a low-end version of it! It's the sorta nice thing Valve does :)

The ATI levels... Do you guys think that an 8600 Ultra will be able to play them well? I mean, It IS a pretty high up graphics card.

EDIT: Holy crap! I'm a civilian! Didn't realize you guys changed it already...

Im not a newbie, lol. I should've clarified it was a joke doofs. I've been workin with PCs and stuff for like...5 years now so I may not be the ULTIMATE PC GURU but I'm good enough to understand basically everything. It's just like the joke "Will my 486 run HL2" or however it went.

Edit: My 200th post :cheese: movin on up to the East side to get myself a piece of pie :D
