The single player might turn out just ok, but without multiplayer, this game is going to suck. I was actually interested in Half Life 2 when I first heard about it last year, but when I found out it won't be coming with a multiplayer, I was like screw this game, back to playing more Unreal 2004. HL2 had a lot of potenital but they messed it up big time by not including multiplayer. No way will it have the same longevity as the original HL1 as that one had multiplayer. MODS were able to build off a solid HL1 multiplayer component, which HL2 doesn't have. Also, it's stupid to rely on mod makers to provide your multiplayer content. iD thought the mod community would provide Doom 3 with lots of multiplayer content. Look how that turned out.
Finally, what PC FPS game (that turned out successful) doesn't have multiplayer these days? Even crappy FPS games have multiplayer. It's achronisitc that a PC FPS wouldn't come with it's own multiplayer these days. It's almost not a PC FPS without multiplayer. Realize that alot of people, like myself, barely play single player nowadays, and buy PC FPS mostly for multiplayer, and won't even consider buying FPS games without it. With single player only games, it's easier to just pirate them, since they don't provide as much value as multiplayer, and since you don't have to register online with servers for online play.
Oh, and don't even mention CS:S, which I consider as it's own game and separate from HL2. Not only that, but it sucks. I wasted an hour on CS:S, only to realize why I hated playing Counterstrike in the first place. What a pile of *****
Without multiplayer, which HL1 relied on most for selling so well all those years, this game will flop! Sorry Valve, but you blew it. Better luck next time that is if you don't go bankrupt. Actually, I'm not sorry. I hope they do go bankrupt, for all their lies and their greed. They deserve it.
