Thoughts about idling and mantling?

What if you leave the game running, and go for a drink or something...will the NPC's around you notice it? I was thinking about this and you could make gordon "pass out"; i.e. the screen goes black as a sort of screensaver after a couple of minutes of being idle, and when you get back, all the NPC's stand over you and prod you trying to see if you're still alive and are all relieved when you get up... then again, if you keep doing that it'd seem funny to me at least that someone who passed out twice in the last hour is fit enough to fight hordes of opponents and to be trusted in general...

Does the game support mantling (i.e. crawling up on boxes, without jumping straight onto them - I'd like to see you jump onto a crate in real life...even though it's possible it seems unnatural to me :rolling: )? Unreal 2 had that, one of it's more interesting features, to me at least :o ).
I searched for mantling and found that someone in the official info thread asked about it, but he described it as auto-mantling, so when you touch a box you get up on it automatically, instead of having to jump or whatever first... so now I'm not 100% sure. :upstare:

Gordon passing out? Did somebody slip him some rohypnol?

No, according to the Info From Valve thread, mantling is not supported.

/me presses "esc" during gameplay

Crisis solved! :P

Hahahha, that idling sounds really funny :P Gordon would like fall asleep while standing up

That is one of the most original ideas I have heard in months.

They had something like this in the old 2d games. Take Commander Keen for instance. If you didn't do anything for about a minute he would look at the screen and start tapping his foot in impatience. Then after about 3 minutes he would sit down and start reading a book.

It's a neat idea, but I think too many people hit the pause button or return to the menu, or simply save and turn the game off when they leave. I want to see this idea modded for sure. :D

Mantling is pretty useful/realistic. I remember playing doom, and to get to the armor on the 2 foot ledge *GASP!* you had to go alllllll the way around a passage simply because you couldn't jump. At least the 2 inch stairs were climbable (hehe, all downhill levels).

Mantling is the next step of that. I can't jump over a fence, but I sure can climb one! Just makes sense.

i think that would be funny to have all the npc's around you, but you could always just hit the Esc key, im sure someone could mod it in.....

to SMT : What did I say about the official valve info thread?

To all those pressing esc : Yes, of course...but
1) A bunch of games, especially online ones, continue while the menu is open. Some do have a seperate pause button. But the idea was basically thought up because sometimes you just forget it, like when you dash for the phone or the door! And if you're like me, those events usually turn out to take longer than anticipated and thus Gordon is just standing there, oafing around at best. In the old games when development time wasn't so tight this was a natural thing to put in (cfr the Keen example above, in command and conquer, though you weren't idle, your soldiers were often, and they'd do push ups, brush their guns, etc...). I sort of feel that the premise that "you are Gordon" sort of demands for a certain solution to when you're idle for no good reason.

I want to add one more thing : It'd be good for people who have epilepsy and get a seizure, the screen going black would make sure that the light patterns that might have caused it would be gone. Allthough I'm no expert on epilepsy, it's just one benefit that it might have (not that they'd magically be cured of course ...).

Yeah, the old games had a lot of cool stuff like that. I remember in Toejam and Earl you would fall asleep and have to press buttons to get your character to wake up. Good stuff.

I am sure the resistance fighters will leave you behind if you decide to sit there.

They all have personalities, and personal wants and dislikes and such. They will start saying, "Gordon cmon! We gotta get a move on!" And then, "That's it I'm out of here!"
And then maybe a fighter with more moral or respect for Gordon, (Maybe based on you saving him in an earlier battle) "No Raymond, don't go! You'll get killed!"

Etc.

HL2's AI is going to kick A$$!!

I am almost 100% sure situations like this will happen. And it rocks. :D

HE USED MY NAME! Liek oh mi gosh. :P I would love for that to happen.

i reckon the NPCs should start shunting you along with the Push button, and put u in a really strange location, just like so many clan mates like to do when u dissappear for 5 minutes !!!

Hahaha, that'd be so funny. You come back to your comp and you are in a totally different spot and Barney is jumping around you and shooting the ground and spamming his flashlight. Now THAT is AI! :D

If you imagine standing next to a crate that comes up to ur chest, you cant exactly just "climb" it. I personally would put my hands on top and hop up. (cntl+jump ;))

Mantling also sounds like it could get very annoying, like in DM if you walk into a crate for too long (trying to hide from fire) you climb and stand on top - in full view! lol

Nah i like it how it is thank'yee'very'much!

what does mantling mean ? what does it do ?????? can someone explain ????????????????????????

Read the darn thread.

It means like climbing.. Kinda.. Like walk up to a crate thats short enough and you will climb up.

Mantling means to grab onto a ledge that is above you, either to shimmy along the ledge or to pull yourself up on top of the ledge.

does anyone esle remember the idle for those bugs that gordon held in his hand and you would throw them off. he would hold in his left and and then try and touch it with his right and the bug would go all crazy and his hand would jump back. i thought that was the coolest thing ever.

Haha, good times. :)

Reload animations are fun. Like with the Python he slowly pulls back the hammer, hehe. *Slip* BAM!
