Thoughts on what it all means

Hello all! After completing HL2 twice now I have some thoughts on the whole thing (lenghtly posts here folks). First things first (G-Man):

In HL, you see the G-Man throughout the game. It seems odd but he is always around, ahead of you. After beating Nihilinth (sp) he notifies you of a job well done. He mentions how "Xen is now in our control." He also mentions his "employers" or "colleagues" (cant remember which one) "are very impressed." Also throughout this sequence you are teleporting to different areas of Xen. At the very end, you are with him on a train. If you notice the background it seems you are traveling in a black tunnel with points of light passing by (keep this in mind). You enter the portal and a message appears notifying Gordon has been "Hired."

Now onto HL2:

At the very beginning you are traveling through the blackness with points of light passing by (see above). G-Man appears telling you "wake up and smell the ashes." Near the end of the beginning sequence, I was often reminded of the end of HL2. The very last part when he disappers from your field of vision is like how he appears in the end.

Now the guy standing by the doors of the train remarks "I didn't even see you get on." So apparently, Gordon was transported, or placed on this train (correct word here?). And/or apparently Gordon has been taken out of the tunnel of blackness and lights (taken out of stasis??).

Throughout HL2 we see the G-Man, again as HL, ahead of us at every step; watching everything. Two interesting sightings is when you get in the red rail car (the beginning when you are running). First interesting sighting, A vortigon (sp?) is watching the G-Man on the TV (the vortigon has his hands up powering the TV). It abruptly goes off shortly after you arrive. Second intersting sighting is with the Combine binocs. You see the G-Man across the way talking with someone from the resistance. If I am not mistaken he shakes hands. So what we can conclude from this is the vortigons (listen to what they say throughout the game, more evidence possibly to this conclusion) have something to do with the G-Man (or they know of him?). We can also conclude that the resistance is meeting with the G-Man, but for what (possibly finalizing deal for the use of Gordon?).

Another interesting point is Alyx notifies (when you first meet her) you "funny you showing up on this day."

I have some in-depth thoughts on Dr. Breen (comments in beginning and the end), the first teleportation sequence (when you appear in Dr. Breen's office momentarily), and the Combine leader (or Combine liason to Dr. Breen?) that Dr. Breen is talking to in the beginning and the end. This will be my next post.

I have plenty more thoughts on the G-Man and other stuff. I'll post more later. I'm just trying to get my thoughts setup logically here. I think we have to seperate these different areas or facts (G-Man, Combine, Vortgons, Dr. Breen, teleportation, etc) to help paint the larger picture here. More to come...

Hello again! Another point I did not make for the above is apparently, Gordon has not aged (nor the G-Man for that matter). Dr. Vance tells says something about you not aging at all ("iota" or something to that effect). So apparently Gordon has been in some type of stasis (as noted in first post).

I'll also add a "Facts" and "Speculation" section (bulleted) at the end of every post. This way, we can cleary distinguish the main facts and the speculation derived from these facts.

I'm thinking of just creating a document and posting a link to it as I've got to many thoughts on this. I don't want to make huge lenghty posts. Any thoughts on if y'all would like to see a clear and hopefully, coherent document??

Hello, welcome to the forums. Let me just say as a writer of incredibly long posts, nobody minds. They will be read. :) Post away for as long as you want.

There's some speculations about some of the things you mentioned going on in some other threads; you might want to check those out also. Namely, the Ending Spoilers thread is talking about G-Man and Dr. Breen right now. Actually most currently we're talking about Gordon, but it all ties in together.

Anyway, again, welcome. Welcome to City Sevente--I mean, welcome to Rumors and Speculation. :dork:

G-Man works for U.S. Fed Gov

I'm going to go out on a limb here. I think the G-Man works for the government. They sent G-Man to monitor a risky experiment which went wrong. Now he has been charged with helping to restore earth so the U.S. Government (in hiding) can return to the surface again...

duh...
lol

so that means...

Gordon is jumping through time/space? I get it! G-mans "employers" must be some other Alien race. what it comes down to is this..."the right man in the wrong place can make all the difference"...damn, we need a movie! :x

No, g-man would never work for someone as evil as the US government...

Did I say evil? Sorry, I meant cheesy.

Actually it was "right man at the wrong TIME" so he is denoting that gordon has travelled into the future or past (we find out later that is is the future)

I think he says place, not time.

In case of you didn't noticed it: in the beginning, when gman speaks, you're actually in the citadel and being transported!

I thought it was just some sort of weird glimpse the g-man gives you of what to come, like the flashback to the test chamber.

I believe it was both place and time:
"The right man in the wrong place at the wrong time can make all the difference...in the world"

I agree. I believe it just a glimpse (note the test chamber appearing first, showing the past). As for the opening G-Man quote, the G-Man does say "The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference."

I think I just thought of something here that is somewhat unrelated. I don't think we can factor in Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay into this whole HL/HL2 speculation. For one, they were not created by VALVe. Two, I don't think VALVe wrote these developers some stories and said, "make a game out of this." I think the seperate developers came up with their own stories and created games from this. If you look at expansion packs in general, they are created by another company usually and continue the story in some way. However, when you see "2" or "3" of the same game come out, nothing is related to the expansion pack (disregard WarCraft and StarCraft in this equation!). For example, Quake II had two expansion packs (if i'm not mistaken). Created by different developers with their own stories based off the first one. Let me know if i'm totally out of line on the above thought!

Now, the G-Man again. Another note you might want to make is the G-Man finishes Alyx's line at the very end (when time stops). If you notice Alyx says something to the effect of, "Gordon quick, we have to get out of here, we don't have..." EVERYTHING STOPS. ENTER G-Man's voice "Time, Dr. Freeman? Is it really that time again?" So apparently, the G-Man has been watching us more closely then we realize. Through Gordon's eyes or as a ghost type thing (as when he appears in front of our view). Again, this just points out how he has technology (or powers) that are truly amazing.

Nope, it's place.
I'm afraid you're wrong there thous Casca, Marc Laidlaw wrote HL, HL2, OpFor and Blueshift

Thanks AJ! I stand corrected. I also found this interesting bit of information from an interview with Marc Laidlaw:

Marc Laidlaw: The specter of a sequel loomed large near the end of Half-Life’s development, but it never figured into the original storyline. The immediately obvious sequel ideas were spun off into Opposing Force and Blue Shift right away. But our main concern was to leave things open enough so that we could do what we wanted to do with Half-Life 2 when we had time to actually design the game.

Thanks again for pointing this out to me!
