trouble playing HL2

hi guys.. need help...just purchased HL2...but cant start a new game...after i click the game.exe the first page loads (NEW GAME...LOAD GAME..FIND SERVER..CREATE SERVER...OPTION ...QUIT). now when i press new game another box appears with "SELECT THE LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY OR TRAINING ROOM THEN CLICK PLAY" (TRAINING....EASY ...MEDIUM ...HARD)....when i check the fields for playing game either EASY,MEDIUMOR HARD and press PLAY... nothing happens..but i can play training room and after i get congratulation for being successful commander(..i guess this is wat they say) i have nowhere to go...plz help...i am attaching the screen shots.

missed one more point

i forgot to tell before...i can create the server and and go online... i can actually play except there are noone there lol....but i cant join any servers..and i read i have to update the steam after i install the games but i see no buttons to update..how to update?...and yes am gonna shove this CD inside my vendors ass that he wont forget,... thanks anyways

I am very sorry to have to inform you on this but that is not a retail version of Half-life 2. Steam should update by itself if you have internet connection btw.
