How does installing mods to Half-Life 2 over Steam work?
I have a saved game right in the middle of my first playthrough that I don't want to lose, but I also want to take a break from playing the main game to try out some of the different total or partial conversion mods.

1. Where do I install the mods? Where do I uninstall them?
2. Can I still use my old saves once I get rid of the mods? What happens to the save games for the converted game once I convert back and vice versa?

I've been to more than a couple sites asking about this and noone has taken the time to answer. I'd be more than grateful if someone could help me out soon. Thanks

where ever you have installed steam, the folder to place or extract the mod to is your sourcemods folder.

for me its C:\program files\valve\steam\steamapps\sourcemods

so when you install it goes in that folder (some mods come with installs other's you manually drag the folder into sourcemods), then you restart steam and they appear as a third party game ready to be played.

you simply delete that specific mod folder in sourcemods to get rid of it.

if your worried about loosing saves it will only be the mod thats affected if you get rid of a particular mod, but if you look in that mod's folder there is a folder that keeps your saved games somewhere.. you can copy and keep those elsewhere if you want as a back up to use again if you have to redo your machine or something.

I downloaded DayHard and replaced the "hl2" folder with the "dayhard" folder. But, apparently, all that has changed is the character models. People on the train on the level "Point Insertion" behave as they do in the normal game, but they're all wearing "Just Do It" jerseys. I'll give my life debt to anyone who helps me on this.

(Sorry about that 02:18AM post; I began typing it before your message was posted)

So the Half-Life 2 folder remains untouched, correct?

yes correct put mods in sourcemods folder 'only', now me needs sleep D:.

Got it working. Awesome, thanks man.

That was alot easier than I thought, and Day Hard is pretty cool.
PC Gaming is so much better than console gaming.
