I bought a used version of this game on Ebay. When I try to activate the game thru Steam, I get an "invalid CD" message. If I read their rules correctly, apparently, Steam will not accept a receipt from Ebay as proof of purchase, in order to reset the CD key, so am I screwed? Is there a way around this convoluted mess?

Sounds like someone else is using the CD key...Did you get the steam account with the game?

Yeah dude tell that bastard to give you the steam account. If he won't it could be a scam and the account has been banned. 'Course if he does that it'll give you all his games for free. :|

You're screwed without the account. Bug the guy who sold it to your incessently or get him ban't.

Yea, contact the guy who sold it to you and try to get the steam account and password I guess. Probably a scam though...

man. you are quite scewed. you should never buy off ebay, i mean it's so cheap on steam now.. like they said, constantly bug that guy

Hmm, I got episode 1 off ebay, but it was new, cdkey was valid, and it worked with my already existing steam account.

should i not have told you all that?

Once you install Half life onto your personal steam account, It pretty much sticks to that account, so it's probably best that you buy the game new from an official store, at least then you know 100% it's yours, and you shouldn't get any CD-key problems, it should be quite cheap these days anyway.

I'd only buy HL2 related products from Steam. Only buy PC software from Ebay if you know that the CD Key ISN'T tied to an on-line account (like with STEAM).

The geezer could leave HL2 installed, use the cd-key and just essentially sell you a coaster, which is what appears to have happened here - unless he has genuinely forgotten to shut his STEAM account)

Aww man your screwed unless it wasn't a scam and he's nice enough to give you the account.

V-Man's anger at this scammer

I fricking hate anybody who's willing to sell you a box and cd just for $20 bucks. Lesson learned: never buy steam available products over e-bay or the internet.

Why didn't you buy it through Steam? D:
