Is this a viable thing to do, or should I look at another engine? I love the source engine for it's simplicity and elegance and I want to make a 3d game with a fixed isometric camera and turn-based, utilising the great lighting and physics in Source.

Am I going tobe making this too much work for myself or will Source be easily adaptable to such a game?

Source can easily cope with such a project.

Sure why not?

Source can handle this kind of project. And to me, games are HARD to make and im a noob at making all these!

That's great to know thanks guys. So it doesn't have a problem with rendering and such? As your effectivly seeing more at a greater distance right, so that's alot of pressure on your system? Although I suppose you'd use much lower poly models..Hmmm.

Sorry, just thinking out loud! :D

It depends how far you will be able to zoom out.

I hope someone makes a simple RPG mod. It wouldn't be too difficult. I'm going to start one for UT2007.

So, do you want to share you mod idea? :)

Hehe. It's not particularly original, I just want to make an X-com game like UFO: Enemy unknown and Terror from the Deep. It started of as a 'remake' mod but after all the 'improvements' I want to make it'll end up a little different. Probably for the best really as I understand Microprose are a little tight about their copyright hold on the franchise, hence the X-com games under a new name (aftermath and aftershock).

None of these come close to the fun I had with the first two X-com games, so i'm hoping to recreate that feeling. :)

i supose youll be making a pitch on the help wanted and offered section?

Possibly, but not until I've got something to show for it. I'm not very experienced at all this, and I've seen people get shouted down too many times on the Help Wanted area if they haven't got anything apart from an 'idea' to bring to the table. I will be playing with the SDK for a while yet, I think! :E

Conquest: City 17 is basically a real-time X-Com-style game set in the Half-Life 2 universe ;)

I guess the Source engine can handle nearly every imaginable gamplay type - except of those which requireds very large free enviroments like the most simulations.

just a matter of skill and time.
