very slow loading screen

so i started hl2 ep 1 up tonght, and it got to loading screen and it took ages to load. Finally it did, then i went to change settings in options and options took ages to load, and each tab i clicked on jus as long. what on earth is going on.

my pc is an amd 4400 ati x1900 and gig of ocz platinum ram i dont expect this kind of thing to happen

no matter that problem is fixed...now i have the problem of it stuttering like a biatch every few seconds...even on the lowest settings, so it wasnt the high settings that i put it on making the problem.
anyone have a clue?

just to clarify what the stutter is like.

every say 4-5 seconds it freezes the frame, and whatever sound was playing at the second it freezes it plays over and over again for about 8-10 seconds and then repeats
please someone must know of a solution

Have you defragmented your hard drive recently?
Also, make sure your firewall allows HL2E1 to connect to the internet. You can also try running the game without your firewall and antivirus activated.
Maybe one of the background programs is hogging all the CPU power / RAM usage.

i ran it with all my protection on and without it all on, there was no difference.
As for cpu/ram the only thing that was taking up any was hl2.exe therest was jus very little, it certainly wasnt enough to justify stuttering.
Bare in mind that i ran it on the lowest settings with an uber rig so was gettin 200+ fps so it must be something else

A fragmented hard drive can still give stuttering at high FPS rates. Use the Windows fragmentation analysis tool.

my ram size is 1 gig ocz platinum (low latency overclocking ram)
my harddrive is brand new and this is a fresh install of windows like 2 days ago its not gonna be fragmentation problem

Now that we got memory size out of the way, check your HDD. It doesn't really matter how new your HDD is, and it doesn't take long for your HDD files to frag. Right-click "My Computer", click "Manage", look for "Disk Defragmenter" and click it, select c:\ and click "Analyse" .
I'm sure, Windows along will frag your HDD like nobody's business.

Your hard drive would not cause stuttering as the data is loaded into ram before it is used by the cpu etc. Stuttering is a problem many people seem to experience when HL2 first came out, have a look back through some of the old threads and check you have all the HL2 updates downloaded. Also check you have the latest drivers for your sound and graphics card.

Fragged HDDs do caused major stuttering in games and Windows, as game files, drivers, DX files and other vital files you need to play games are scattered all over the drive, never mind the HDD working double the time to gather bits and pieces of files a Gig or two apart, creating heat.
And only the files you are now accessing are the ones loaded into ram and not the entire game files (If I'm correct a 4GB game would need 4GB of ram, if the entire game was loaded). Example: When you pass a checkpoint, the next level loads into memory and previous level exits memory along with your saved files back to HDD. That's why checkpoint take time to load even if you try to turn back to the last level you just been into, in this case if your HDD is fragged, this will take tediously long time.
Also your virtual memory area of the HDD will be a mess crating additional over-time work for HDD swiping files back and forth.
Please check and compare your facts before misinforming others as some may actually believe you.
