I am refering to that video where they show the G-Man's face at the end. There is a scene where you see a blue laser bouncing off a building and then hitting you... I think this was the part in front of the Nexus building where you have to kill some Striders...

Anyway, I did not see this when I played the game. Is that another thing that was cut from the game or do I need a newer video card?

I have no clue what video you are reffering to. you mind giving a direct link> or a screenshot of that specific scene?

Ok after examining the video a frame at a time I noticed that the laser doesn't bounce off the building. It comes from a Strider. But if you pay attention, it seems to create an energy field which deforms the space behind it. And this optical illusion I did not see.... I woudl post a screen shot but I currently don't have a web page

The strider cannon effects work fine for me. I saw them a few times during the game. The striders don't fire their cannons that often, but each time they do there's a blue laser, space deforms, and there's a blue-white plasma ball. I've been seeing the cannons a lot more since I finished the game because I worked out how to make striders fire cannon at whatever I want them to.

Yeah, they do fire, but don't do it often if you are behind cover. They only fire if you are stood out in the open like an idiot.

This has a good reason, it's very powerful and you'd just die all the time if they fired it often.

the videos aren't all exactly the same, while playing through HL2 I noticed many discrepancies between videos and actual game, the subtlest of which is a different graffiti spray on the coast video.

The effect looks great, but I couldn't appreciate it much seeing as when it happened I was too busy ducking!

How'd you spawn them above ground?

To spawn them above ground I use "give npc_strider". It normally makes them go above ground, but on that level they go slightly under, so I have to noclip a few feet skywards to get it to work.

As for getting them to shoot stuff with the giant cannon:

Look at a strider. Type "ent_setname strider".
Look at something you want to be dead. Type "ent_setname dead".
Type "ent_fire strider setcannontarget dead".

You have to change the names if you have more than one strider or if the strider stops killing. I think you have to spawn a new strider for the latter as well. It'll continue to kill stuff as long as you don't tell it to kill something which isn't alive.

I've seen a couple of these too in Follow freeman (The level with the striders) .

Also, VALVe released bink videos more than often from levels not intended to be in the final release. That in order to show the more of the engine and the less of the actual game. Who enjoys a movie when the 45 seconds thriller shows it all? VALVe understood this thing and just gave candies.
