first of all, I searched and found nothing!

well, you know how alyx says "The Vortigaunt said you were here"! think about it .. alyx was coming from another direction .. and the Vortigaunt that was talking to Eli never left the lab (before alyx came that is ..), so how the hell did the Vortigaunt know Gordon was there ..? maybe they can communicate telepathically? or they are using wallhacks =P

There is an instance in the stolen build where something similar happens .. but I can't say anything about it as you know
hmm .. they can be good use in that case .. telling us if there are combine soldiers around the place .. etc :E

I ..... I didn't say anything in it .. !

sorry, never read it, i just saw spoiler, highlighted a few words, saw stolen build, got scared, and ran off like a baby :E

Or...Maybe Eli told the Alien to go get Alyx.

Didn't she said "vortigaunts" instead of "vortigaunt"?
So it haven't to be the same one, you see in the lab.

Yeah, she might have been coming in another way but was told by another slave which was informed her of Gordons arrival.

Maybe a vortigaunt or two saw Gordon entering the elevator? Or entering the complex? Gordon odesn't magically materalise halfway down the elevator shaft, you know...there is the chance that someone saw him before he entered the elevator. :)

There was more than one in the labs. On the lift as you come down, you see several having target practice I think it was.

The e32k4 video, it dont look like they are having target praccy, i thought it was powering the electicity, like a generator... with the electric attack

Maybe it was the vortigaunt that you passed on the way down the elevator that was repairing something?

Clairvoyance is probably closer to what you're describing. But, as far as I know, Vortigaunts are telepathic, to some extent. How else would the Alien Controllers boss them around in the original game?

The controllers could be psychic, but not the Vortigaunts - that would explain it. Or they could wave their arms around in a semaphore-type code...

Possibly. With three arms, hand signals take on a whole new level :)

Heh, they always looked like they were sculling or trying to keep their balance to me.

Of course they could be speaking normally - at pitches above/below human hearing for example. For all we know they can communicate using bioluminescant lights outside the (human) visible spectrum

omg ROFFEL ROFL lol LMAO omg omg!!!11!OMG ROFL

Smells like spam.

I like the bioluminescent lights idea. Each different illumination pattern could be a word or concept.

Then again, it could work on a pheromone system, with different smells for different words - now that'd be odd...

OR MAYBE: you interacted with them earlier in the game and they informed Alyx of this.

It is possible but I'd say they communicate by speaking. In Half-Life they'd already learned "Die!" (and they said "Hweeya" or something similar to each other) so perhaps after ten years the scientists have taught them more. "Freeman in lab! Freeeman in lab!"

I wonder how they generate electricity now, I always assumed it was related to their bracelets.

The one in Eli's lab doesn't have any bracelets. I couldn't tell whether the ones shooting electricity had them on or not.

Nihilanth wore them as well, I thought they were his way of controlling the slaves. With him dead, the slaves are able to take them off.

exactly.

In case anyone doesn't understand, this principle attributed to William of Occam(or ockham) [although he didn't make it up] states "plurality should not be posited without necessity" or the simplest explanation is usually the correct one, until further evidence is revealed.

There's a voice actor for the Vortigaunts, so I'd guess that they can speak.

They've always spoke. If they were psychic they'd have no need for complex vocal chords. The controllers, for instance, are psychic; therefore, they don't need to vocalize anything except for their angry screeching and death noises.

The Vortigaunts speak English. It's not perfect English but it's not like "Gordon in lab" caveman speak either. And that's all I'm gonna say on that...

Yeah, I was talking about how the Controllers ordered the vortigaunts about... we never heard them speak.

I like speculation.

Don't like it much when someone cuts it short.

man the controllers (i guess you mean the mini nihilanths) were psychic same as all smarter forms of the xenians . i thougt it was already know that the vortigaunts have telephatic abilities ! i guess that they read gordons mind and told alyx about gordons arrival , or one of the vortigaunts saw gordon and told it some of his alien friends :)

and yes its true they learnt to speak a bit english ! but in half-life 1 they only could say things like "dieeee" ! i guess that the scientists teached them all over the time :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Vorts found it necessary to learn to speak english... the Xenian language sounds like it would be very hard to learn, let alone pronounce with a human voicebox.

(By the way, you do know that you can edit your posts for a full 15 minutes after posting, don't you eber?)

press edit.

Anyway, when alyx said 'the vortigaunt said you were here' it doesn't mean she was referring to the one talking to Eli. One of the other aliens probably saw you previous to the video.

Telepathy for all intelligent Xenians is a rather baseless assumption (though the Nihilanth may have had it), we've heard all of them use their voices...

Do the Xenian Grunts count as intelligent? All they seem to do is roar and... err... grunt.
