Can someone please give me a quote or explanation on the background and story of vortigaunts? Where they come from, why they help humans now, etc (if such information is available yet)

And PLEASE, Samon, dont tear me apart because I didnt spend the time to read through the wordy posts, or because i was ignorant to key parts in stickys, or a misunderstanding of something lol :P

If I missed something just give me a cute little link and let that be that :D

Thank You!

The quicker version than reading through all of that:

Vortigaunts were slaves to the Nihilanth and the Controllers for countless millenia. When the Combine came, they fled, and kept fleeing until they reached Xen.

Some time later Gordon Freeman kills the Nihilanth which frees them from being slaves, they arrive on Earth via the portal storms, and they begin collaborating with the humans. When the Combine come, they take up the fight alongside the human resistance.

Where do the vortigaunt grunts fit in from half-life 1? If Nihilanth was the leader, controllers were his officers (for lack of a better term), and vorts were slaves then were the grunts basically the nihilanth's soldiers?? I remember seeing them stored in cilinder containers on xen; they came out when you blew them up.

Alien Grunts (not vorts) Were not slaves, but more of citizens of Nihilant.

Vortigaunts make them in factories under nihilants commands via alien controller.

Nothing says they were made, only packaged. If anyone made them, it was the controllers.

But yes, grunts are soldiers. Grunts aren't vortigaunts though. Completely different species.

Source?

because to me they look vortigaunt...little arm in chest...similar eyes...The difference seems to be that they are biologicaly engineered versions of vortigaunts (almost like the combine. I am NOT saying they ARE combine, because im pretty sure they are not)

There seems to be a strong resemblence in the legs (bend), the third arm (not visible in the photo), skin texture, color, and eyes. Even then, the HL1 vort looks MORE similar to the grunt than the HL2 vort; who knows what visual changes the grunt would have went thru if it transitioned to HL2.

Your thoughts, please.

We see grunts being transported in combat crates in a factory in HL1, implying they're being manufactured. They aren't the same species.

Either that or that's how they get the armour and weapons grafted on.

Edit: While we're on the subject of Vorts, did anyone else find the 'new' vort skin / voice sort of...disappointing?

Just more understandable, methinks.

I liked the old leathery vorts. It's not a big deal to me, though. The navel solved an important question about them, so it all balances out.

As to the grunts and vortigaunts...

Stockier frame, pincer-like hands, three eyes instead of six (or four, now), mandibles rather than a sucker-like mouth, different skin. It's a different creature. It would have had the same common ancestor as a vortigaunt, like humans do with apes, but it isn't the same creature.

Because controllers also bear a third arm, triplicate jaws, and a much similar skin texture to a grunt than a vortigaunt does. The only difference is the thinner frame, I believe the legs are more humanoid than birdlike, the giant heads, and the visor-like eye.

All these creatures are RELATED, but not the same. Not even modified versions of each other.

Nihilanth itself has three arms, and if its legs weren't so distorted, I'd bet they look the same. They evidently all come from the same planet, they're just differen versions I guess.

Yeah, wiki helps.

And yeah, Vortigaunts were freed by freeman. Which might explain why they constantly refer to him as the Free Man :p

Edit: I'm just more curious as to Headcrabs. Where the hell do they fit in?? They're like totally retarded weirdo creatures that have no relationship whatsoever. When I was much younger, I used to think headcrabs, after they'd evolved into zombies would become vortigaunts.

And why the hell haven't there been any vortigaunt sp mods?!?!?

Edit: Edit: And what's wrong with calling "Fast Headcrabs" "Spider Headcrabs"?

Wow, look! They both have four legs, two ears, two eyes and one mouth!

They have to be the same species!

Decay on PS2 has a singleplayer vortigaunt mission.

And there's a big sticky on headcrabs in Singleplayer Mythology.

Didn't get the chance to play Decay, and wiki never mentioned it. I'm waiting for its release. Although I recall there being some weird game based around the aliens. I think I was looking in my cheatbook database years ago, and there being a mention of a mod I'd never heard of. And the description of what to do was awfully alien like...

You're most likely looking for a mod called 'Point of View'.

Omg! Teh sex!

But no, that's not it. I think it was called Decay. But sure, that'll do :D

well, inhabitated the same planet, similar species but not same. The alien grunts went through some hurtfull processes to obtain all that armor and so forth though, upon looking closer on them, i can see all those cable-thingies sticking out of their skins, attached to the armor

What's autism got to do with Vortigaunts...?

I thought they were just related to Yoda.

I imagine Vorts are to Grunts as Cats are to say, tigers/lions.

DOg and Dear cannot be used to compare sentient aliens. Besides, it was said somewhere there all just a bunch of mutated freaks for their use in the hive mind.

Yes it was POV. Its a mod where you play as a vort. Never really got pass the first few levels tho.
