Vortigaunts

I think the weird gravelly-ness of the Vort's Voices is fine enough.

(Although they sorta sound like conspiracy theorists who don't get out much)

I don't really agree with Eber, but I reckon they should have distorted their voices slightly, to make it sound slightly more other-worldly.

Maybe there just not used to talking much so they have sore throats.

Why do you think Vorts evolved an electrical attack? To fend off headcrabs? Is it still an electrical attack in Zen atmosphere (It is, isn't it)

I agree, fend off headcrabs. Infact quite a few Xen animals have long range attacks.

Playing HL1 i always thaught the vorts (slaves then) would be on your side for the sequel.

Their voice sounds like an attempt to immatate humans just like you could attempt to imatate a dog barking or a vort "Flux shift speech"ing

What made you think that? At the end of HL1 I thought killing Nihalith would cause all Vorts to die.

Edit:
Just a thought. Antlions may be from Xen. It would explain how Vorts know how to get bugbait.
And for those who think Xens terrain couldn't support the burrowing etc. of antlions you only say a small piece of Xen in HL1. Plus headcrabs can also burrow.

I actually think Eber has a couple of good points. In HL1 the vortigaunts were badass.. remember all those battles they had against the grunts? They definately own...

The thing is, the Vorts basically have no real role in HL2.. I mean they all could have been replaced by humans and you wouldn't know the difference. A human could attach a gun to a boat and rip out some pheropods too. It would have been cooler to have the Vorts battle with the Rebels through City 17, or anywhere. They really didn't do much for HL2 than add a little flavor. Why didn't you see any of them fighting, even once? In HL1 that was all they did, and they were damn good at it. They could have been a much bigger part of the game, especially with all that stuff they talk to you about. Hopefully Valve will incorporate them more in HL3 or the expansion.

If you want them to fight just spawn them where you want them.
"npc_create npc_vortigaunt"

The awnser to all our problems!

"EXPANSION PACK"

and "MOD"!!!

someone will mod fun vorts. It would have been nice for one to be a main character. You think they have gender?

I do wonder how they reproduce.

How long were people still shooting Vorts in Black Mesa before they coped on to that they were friendly?
"Can we just ta-*boom*"
"I got one!"

As I was reading this thread, I realized that the vortigaunts might have been tied to Gordon Freeman since before he severed Nihilanth's cord. Once the resonance cascade occurs, after your brief view of Xen you're transported to a darkened area where you are surrounded by vortigaunts. Then you wake. That may have some significance, possibly something metaphorical like your encounter with the vortigaunts might've triggered some awakening inside your mind, though you don't realize it. On the other hand it could simply be coincidence that you met up with the vortigaunts, but playing around with the theory that it might mean something is much more fun. Remember that it was the slaves that you saw first, not the grunts or the masters.

Remember these Vortigaunts surrounded you in a black room. Usually all black screens either means uncoinsness or in the mind. The ressonance cascade could have implanted the Vortigaunt mind into Freemans head. Than the second image of Xen, might not really have been a transport, it could have been accessing the vorti LAN. You saw Xen through the eyes of a vortigaunt.

It might even help to explain why they attacked you. Nihilinth, could have noticed that a non Xen "logged on" and told the rest to "kill him." Remember, sometimes the Vorti's teleport directly to your location, which could be gotten from them accessing your thoughts,

So has "Vort LAN" become an official term?
If so, I made it up :D

Good point on the Vort room and the teleorts directy to you but I fear we shall never know ;(
