I thought about this when I was walking home today. Through playing the end of Half-Life you could tell that you needed proper equipment (oxygen support, etc.) to survive in Xen. This means that Xen's environment is radically different from Earth's. This also means that the Xen aliens must have gone though some sort of adaptation to survive on Earth. How else could they roam Black Mesa Facility so easily? You never see a bullhound struggling to live. There is little chance that the Xen aliens were already adapted to Earth's environments.
This makes me think that the Combine must have had the Xen aliens held in captivity for a long time, because for all of you who have knowledge in biology, it takes a long time to adapt to a certain environment. It doesn't seem like the Combine actually placed any sort of implants on the Xen aliens. There is no visual difference found between a Xen alien found on Xen and one found on Earth. My guess is that the Combine placed millions of Xen aliens in this metamorphic biochamber, which basically had it's environment change over a great ammount of time.
This is just a thought that might clear up atleast one or two holes in the whole Half-Life saga. Please add thoughts and comments.

um... how is it apparent that there is no oxygen in Xen? The enviroment is diffrent, but I think we can move between them. The aliens are transported straight from Xen to earth in HL1, plus, you dont have to replenish oxygen while in Xen

So I think that you are making and thinking too in depth about this

Yeah, the HEV only has a very limited supply of air. When you're underwater, for example. It runs out in about a minute.

Xen is in the middle of a nebula, and some force is keeping all the matter generally concentrated to a plane. So there's plenty of air.

Worlds stretched thin on the membranes between universes...

or something like that
anyway...perhaps it's the expanding force of other universes which keep xen 'together'?

its a demension, not a planet. So this....place, doesnt follow the rules of the universe
