So, have any of you ever dropped college in persuit of your dreams? I was laying in bed and I was like ,"Man, I really don't enjoy college; I need to get out there and see the world before im some old fart." I am really looking foreward to what the future holds for me though. Just needed to get that out.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I'll drop out of school to look at the Fonz's jacket. Thanks for the inspiration!

Alaska is awsome, good choice. Have fun, catch some fish.

How about finishing college first, then going to Alaska?

Most people I know that have "taken a semester off" of school don't come back. Laziness sets in, they get a mediocre paying job that pays the bills and allows them to spend money on random stuff and they just don't bother finishing.

Half the people on my course are over 21 - don't make the mistake they did. Finish the damn course, then do whatever you want. You should've taken a year out before going to college in this case.

Just finished a 3 year physics degree, i wasn't really enjoying it by the last year but having spent the money and gone that far it was better to finish it than to "take some time out" and as suggested above probably never come back, which is what happened to my step sister...

college only takes a few years ffs

I really want to drop out to move away, I ****ing hate my school. But my girlfriend will break up me, heheh
And I only have a year and a half left, only half if I get a full time job (my school has a "job out" program where you can drop out and still get your full diploma if you get a full time job in your field)

it's a lot harder to go back to school once you've left. College is only a few years of your life but it's absolutely necessary if you ever want to make anything more than minimum/barely liveable wage. Dont waste your opportunity, there are literally millions of people who would love to have that opportunity

I've seen much more of the world after college than before/during college. The great thing is that I can now afford to live it up when I do visit somewhere new because I went to college and have a career. Without the degree and career, visiting places wouldn't be much fun if you can't afford to do it the right way. Also I agree with others here. Once you leave it's next to impossible to come back. I've known many, many people over the years that never went back after just a semester break.

My main gripe is the school that I'm at; I live in the same town taht I lived in growing up and I need a freakin change. I thought about it though, and I've decided that it would be best to transfer to a college that isn't so damn boring, maybe the University of Anchorage.

you're sacrificing your means to a better future in an effort to have a better future?

you're not there to be entertained ...seriously you'd be better off without distractions

dont drop out of school it'll be the biggest regret of your life ..I'm in my 30's and even though I went to college and even went back for a stint I wish I had spent more time in school ...so do the majority of people I know ...it's all fine and dandy to make a low income when you're in your 20's because you may have a fun careeer, but sooner or later it's not enough, you'll find yourself wishing you could trade your safe comfortable job for one that pays a heck of a lot more. Here's an indisputable point: you will never make more than an average income without an education (sure it can be done but it's very rare) ..and trust me, you dont want to be living paycheck to paycheck because your exciting career doesnt pay enough

stay in school, it'll be your biggest regret if you dont

I am going to stay in school, but I'm going to go to Alaska to do it. I'll live there for a year until I get residency and earn some cash, then I will attend their business school and take a trade in carpentry. I'm currently studying to become an engineer, but it is just a bit too much math and desk work for me; I need something where I can dig in and let my ambition run free.

I've never met a carpenter with all 10 fingers ..it's a good job if you're good at it and pays well but it doesnt compare to engineering ..a friend of mine got a $60K/yr job shortly after graduating from university in a different city where they paid for his living expenses for 5 years ..when he came back to toronto he got a hefty raise. He can pretty much write his own ticket and can work anywhere he pleases

yeah, I think I will stick with it for a bit longer and see how I like it. My problem was that I wasn't busting my ass like I should have been. Instead of studying and putting my heart into school I was playing games and stuff. But I'll bust my ass the rest of the semester and see how I like it. Thanks stern, your advice really helped.

well I hope you're not saying that for the sake of saying it ...as someone who's been around for awhile I can honestly say that education will be the biggest factor in your quality of life for the rest of your life. If I could do it all over again I'd probably study my ass off for a decade or so and become a dentist ..my dentist drives a 911 carerra (not that money is the be all and end all but it's nice to be able to do what you want when you want)

When I leave this country to study in an overseas uni I'm never coming back, the pay here is shit, a fresh engineering grad will probably get $15-20k/year on his first job. Not to mention there's a compulsory 2 year military service all 18 year old males have to serve, I can apply for deferment until after I complete my studies, but if I don't come back after completing my studies to serve military time (which I don't intend to do) essentially i'll be jailed the moment I enter the country.

not sure how it is in your country but if you're away from home for school it can count as if you've completed military service ...I've completed the military service in Spain despite never having actually worn a military uniform (yay for me) ..you dont want to throw away a chance of retaining your citizenship because at some point in your life conditions may improve and you may want to return

No, you really did give some good advice and it did change my outlook a bit. I thought about it and I realized that I was running away from something that I was bored with. but it wasn't the field that was boring, it was me.

Snakes don't belong in Alaska... err, never mind that...
