Video games have gone downhill after the millenum. The first probelm is that video games are being shorten in length. It may not seem like a big deal but lets debate and I can prove to you why you should be concered and PLEASE PLEASE if I am fortune enough to get any replys be patenice. I will RESPONED once again if you reply I WILL RESPOND PLEASE BE PATENICE I WILL RESPONDES IT WILL TAKE ME A COUPLE OF DAYS. THANK YOU.

Seems the English language is going downhill also.

LOL

Games are gettin longer, Doom 3=forever, half life 2 = never ending, mmm for example the GTA games WOW etc... UR WRONG

I agree, maybe not the games getting shorter, but 'someone's' boredom factor getting higher...

The half life episodes one and two each one short but its the lack of development talent that is concerning whenever they need less time to make a game NOT GOOD santity makes a comeback.

oh thanks for ALL the replys smart ones too I want to know what EVERYBODY THINKS am I being too eager sorry if I am.

games are getting much more expensive. Where it used to be that you could make a game with 10 people in a couple of months now it takes dozens of people and years or decades *cough*fallout 3*cough* to make. And that leads to changes in the industry so if your looking for that old timey feeling too bad because it's never coming back.

I've finished Resident Evil 4, GTA:San Andreas, as well as Half-Life 2 (not to mention Eps 1 and 2) and think that there is Plenty of Gameplay on all of these. Valve has been doing Episodic Content to release material in a faster time than an entire game, so yeah, they do play faster, but it beats waiting many years for the one game.

Well, admitidly i wasnt playing to many video games back at the turn of the millenia, but i think that ,yes, games (especially fps's) have gotten shorter, but you get more gameplay value out of them and general quality has improved, for instance i beat halo 3 (only 6 or 7 hours long on heroic)(recomended difficulty) two days after it came out, but im still not even close to getting sick of its multi player component and Co-op and capian scoring and achevments and beating it on higher difficultys. now thats only one game, ive played RPGs like morrowind and oblivion (single player only) for years on end without running out of things to do. and those arguments arnt even including the VAST iprovements in graphics and pyhsics which i will not even get started on (Becuas this post is getting to long), in my opionin (which i realize doesnt count for much) the quality of video games is not decreasing, but increasing.

Look, The reason HalfLife2: EP1,2 were both short iss because the meant it to be so. You get short doses of all our favorite drugs at lower prices and short waiting periods! Woo!
Also you suck at spelling and grammar. kthxbye

I think games are decreasing in quality, though not all games. Just look at the differences between Morrowind and Oblivion.

if this thread is about games in general then it does not belong in the "half-life series" section, because that is for discussion of the half life series, funnily enough. this thread should have been made in the general games and gaming section because it is about games in general.

How has the username "halflife" not been taken in 4 years??? D:

I was wondering the same thing! 'Gordon Freeman' just registered a month or two ago, too.

oblivion rocked balls don't talk smack.

I'm not saying I didn't but look what Morrowind had:

1)Spears
2)crossbows
3)'Proper' Looking races
4)Various candles/torches
5)Easy spell management
6)A Great menu system
7)more realistic combat
8)much better leveling system
9)much better story
10)Better gearing system

I could go on for hours. But don't get me wrong, I still enjoy Oblivion.

If you really think video games have gone downhill play bishock it will restore your faith immediately.

"would you kindly" still gives me chills.

Seems the English language is going downhill also.

I hope you didn't spell that wrong on purpose...

Do you not have any originality of your own... go pick a better username.

If you're referring to the Episodes... they're all equivalent to one game. If anything, games have been getting longer.

Sure, Half-Life was uber long and uber everything, but if you examine Opposing Force and Blue Shift after that, they were both pre-millenium, and yet they weren't exactly long.

If you're going to say something like "YEAH, BUT MARIO WAST RELLY LONG LOL" then you might want to think again, because you're comparing two totally different Genres. There were games like Blobby and Willy that weren't particularly long, especially considering the technology behind them.

I AM PATIETLY WETTING YOUR RESPONDES

Episodes are called "episodes" for a very good reason, to be short and sweet..

Okay, Okay this is pretty sweet. Let me break it down.Of course half-life is a brilliant game I think the first one is a work of art BUT can you just imagine what the episode series would provide in gameplay expeince if it under went a normal life cycle. Making a great game is like having a baby IT SOUND SO CORNY BUT PLEASE JUST HOLD and a normal baby has nine months to grow its organs, lungs and brains in a healthy process It also has a chance to bond with its mother in simplier terms deveoplers have a chance to appercate there game and the impact it will have on the world HOLD ON ITS COMING.The doctor are the gamers. If gamers are patince they will have a game though not always a garuntee that will give them an amazing, unbeliveable experince but if gamers are hasty the will receive a game or in this analogy a baby that is born with unfornate birth deffects that will cause the baby to have a horriable life now if everybody in here are TRUE DIEHARD LOVERS OF GAMES AND APPERCIATE THE EXPERINCE THEY GET FROM IT. Then wouldnt waiting for your baby be the responable and right thing to do?.

No matter what Valve does, you will still exist. By you I mean some irritating, irrational, simple minded, spelling bee loser who plays an incredible game and only thinks "OMFG, only 5 hours!? How could they?".

Valve has to decide whether want to hear a group of idiots complaining about the game length or about the game wait. The episodes are great, they are in no way lacking in quality, but since it's only a fraction of a normal length game it some how sucks? We're playing HL3 here, we're just playing it in 3 seperate parts.

By the time Episode 3 is made, we'll, mostly likely, have a more cost effective, longer, better looking, and generally improved game over HL2.

Think of it like this, it's Halflife 2 all over again, only now, they released it a few chapters at a time, much earlier.

The games of these days are highly advanced in all possible directions, it takes a much longer time to create them, it's not like the old days just placing some walls with a texture.

First of all, regarding length: The Half-life 2 episodes were designed with that very aim, shorter episodes, lower price, shorter development time. It's a conscious choice by the developers to bring a small but shining game, polished to perfection (or in your analogy, a small baby boy that will only live until he's 20 but with a huge penis). It's a tradeoff, and in VALVe's case I think it's well worth it. And computer games are not getting shorter, many examples have already been mentioned.
Second: The FPS singleplayer genre is far from dead. FEAR, Half-life 2, Bioshock, Portal, Call of Duty 4 etc etc.

Oh yeah and I fixed up your triple-post suite a little and changed your topic to something more easily digested by the forum layout.

No idea what you're trying to say. I might've critisized someone else for not using capitals... but um... I think you went a bit too far.

All I seem to get is "if video games went under a normal life cycle"... as if the people who create the games (Valve) didn't follow standard/older techniques for doing this... If anything, the life cycle of a computer game has increased by far, and the speed of development quickened.

Could you summarize your point...? Oh, and go read some books. It might can helpful to grammar without.

most games today are making the graphics in a game a priority over gameplay and content put into the game. so far valve has been the best at keep the mix of 2 and im very happy with them.

one thing that will change it when uber-realistic physics are finally able to be used. so anything you do and not somethings you do will effect the game and how you finish it.

No, no no no....

I started playing games when I was tiny, 3-4 years old, on my little Sega Mega Drive. With Sonic the Hedgehog, yeh that franchise is still around, but look at where we are now, HDR, facial movements nearly that of real life and physical enviroments that of the same. And we started in little 2D land, where the only sound effects were slight *Doo* sounds, I think game consoles were pure to the games and easier to use, but GAMES are several light years ahead from where they used to be.

First of all my language is not perfect but you know what? who cares as long as I get message across. Why would anybody play chips and peices of ... yes a good game that you first pay more compared to episodes than if you where to buy a full sequel and why are the with all due respect half-life developers so scared of fanboys waiting for a sequel when it will outclasses the episodes if developers can not handle the challenge and pressure of making a sequel MUCH MUCH better than the orginal THEN DONT MAKE VIDEOGAMES BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THE ART OF MAKING GAMES IS ABOUT AND I WILL TRY TO FINISH THIS LATER... COMPUTER IS MESSED UP.

Utter rubbish. Timeshift, Haze, Bioshock, EP2, Crysis, Call of Duty all came out recently and mostly focus on the singleplayer levels, which have mostly recieved positive reviews. NEXT.

Valve wants to put out their games a bit more often than every five years, because working on a game for five years and then working on the sequel for another five years wears people out, gets them bored and unmotivated, not to mention the fans' (this site being an exception because the majority of HL2 players are not super-fans like we who *would* wait that long) enthusiasm tends to diminish over the course of half a decade.
Besides, seeing as how VALVe just recently released Team Fortress 2, a game which very quickly became immensely popular on the multiplayer scene, Portal, probably the most praised singleplayer game this year after Bioshock and possibly Halo 3 and Episode 2, all for an extremely low price and all extremely well-crafted, popular and critically acclaimed games in a very short time, how can you debate that this is in any way a decrease in quality? VALVe's games have never been better. They set the bar for the entire computer game industry and then they themselves jump over it.

/Slightly more fanboyish rant than I usually like to spit out.

Oh, and while I don't like to complain about grammar and spelling unless necessary, your last post *was* a bit hard to understand. Just a tip.

That makes you the only person on the earth who thinks so.

then there must be millions of copies of me...

You know what this means!

Kneel before me mortals for I am Multiple Man!!!

who cares as long as I get message across.

That's the problem. I just don't understand you. It's not the language. It's just the lack of punctuation and excessively long sentences. I just got lost in the depths and lengths that went into one of those sentences, being wrapped up by the evil tentacles that entwined my mind and attempted to suck the juices from them.

... wtf? that was really deep...

LOL

.I can not be wrong because the half-life series is getting shorter. Remember the episodic games that just came out and what about heavenly sword?. I would go on but you would probably hate me talking for ever and ever.

No matter how expenses games may be... how should I say this?. Valve or any other company can always RAISE THE RETAIL PRICE OF THE GAME HOWEVER ONLY IF GAMERS GET A HELLUVA LOT OF QUALITY GAMING FOR THERE HARD EARNED BUCK and game length is ALWAYS A BIG FACTOR.

IF I USE CAPS PEOPLE WILL GET ME NO MATTER HOW INSANE I AM :farmer:

I will repeat myself: VALVe are trying out episodic games, the whole point of it being shorter games with more polish more often and for less amount of $$$. They are the exception, however, very few companies are doing that at the moment (Sam & Max and the Sin episodes are the only ones I can think of) And Half-life 2 is at least on par with Half-life 1 if not longer in terms of length. Now, I would very much like to know if there's any other reason that FPS games suck these days apart from length. Is it all about penis envy? Do you also mean to say Episode 1 and Episode 2 are not well-crafted but sloppily and hastily made? That they were rushed?

And please: Stop double-posting.

Good point but let me indulge you for a moment. The episodic half-life games are good. I will not be stubborn to the FACT but wouldnt it be more appropriate to include the episodic series as a bonus to HALF-LIFE 3 and I hate to say this but any TRUE fan of any videogame would NOT doubt there game makers by being impatient. Thats like saying hurry up and make the game because I am scared that with all the time I invested in waiting for half-life 3 it WILL NOT MEET I STANDARDS. Sorry.

I am sorry it took me SOOOO long to responded to you.I guess I am a very sloppy host but I do apologize for my delay. Is the single player option dead?. I say yes but here is what kills MY GAMING SOUL. A lot of gamers could CARELESS LESS about the single player option to them its a useless option on there t.v screen. They would rather bang some bullets with there friends online and I say GO AHEAD AND HAVE FUN ITS WHAT MULTIPLAYER IS MADE FOR but here is the kicker. Whenever multiplayer and I do not care how good it is EXCELS
SINGLE PLAYER IN TERMS OF FUN THERE IS A BREAKDOWN IN KEY, KEY GAMEMAKING FUNAMENTALS AND THATS WHAT KILLS ME. The two gameplay options should really complement each other in a fun sort of way. Like a professional boxers ONE!, TWO! left hand right hand jab but all todays business and developers care about is money, money , money. Think about it. When you bought halo 3 you payed roughly sixty dollars for it... right?. The makers of that game. Bungie studios spent most of there companys three development years and thirty THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS!!!IN MULTIPLAYER!!! and the average fps p.c DIEHARD gamer KNOWS HOW WEAK HALOS 3 SINGLE PLAYER IS so why not have gamers pay the price of the game which is multiplayer anyway. Halo 3 has no respectable single player and HEY! why not pay for xbox live too which is fifty dollars a month... SO GAMERS ARE REALLY PAYING ONE-HUNDRED AND TEN DOLLARS. Thats the price you payed to get the game and xbox live. A YEAR FOR MULTIPLAYER AND DO NOT LET ME GET STARTED ON SINGLE PLAYER CO- OP!.

I find Episodic games have kind of failed their purpose. I agree that rushing games can have disasterous consequences, but the entire point of episodes is to make more and shorter games that continue the series, releasing them faster than a single game. However, most companies seem to be falling behind in the third requirement.

edit: Dude, I pay like`$60 for thirteen months of xbox live
