what are alpha-glucose and beta-glucose?

Isomers, most likely optical isomers rather than structural.
If i remember correctly Polymers of each different one make up starch or cellulose.

In alpha-glucose, the hydroxy group on carbon one is axial (down-pointing) and in beta-glucose, the same group is equitorial (up-pointing)

Exactly what I was going to say.

The "alpha-glucose" is the dominant male of the glucose heard. He is the strongest, most verile, best mating partner of all the hottie "glucosettes". The "beta glucose" however, is religated to slops. Though on occasion the "beta Glucose" has been known to challange the "alpha" resulting in a 3 day battle royal. A grueling ritual of wich only one will survive, to claim/retain there possision of "Alpha Glucose"

hope this helps :)
