What are these 'enemies' called

When you are located at the coast/beach and you go to far in the water you encounter somekind of eel (they attack you and you will die quick). What are they called?

Are the mentioned in the hl2 strat guide? Are they from Xen?

they're called a gimmick to keep you from swimming off the edge of the map

They are leeches. They were in the first game.

Yeah, they're Xenian leeches. They look bigger to me than they were in the first game. Maybe the conditions on Earth are more conducive to their growth...
