What are your thoughts on HL2's multiplayer?

I'm getting Half-Life 2 for the single player. I suspect that by the time I'm done with the single player portion, Counter Strike: Source won't be the only multiplayer option available.

But seriously, what have you people been looking forward to playing for the past six years, another vanilla deathmatch game set in the Half-Life universe or the continuing adventure of Gordan Freeman and friends?

At best, my "hype meter" broke even from this announcement (it feels more like it took a significant dip).

The only good parts were that the SP was more than they expected and there were a few surprises. The problem with that information is that I already knew there would be some kind of surprise feature(s) and I expected nothing but the best from the SP. So, that really didn't do anything for my hype.

For someone that's been playing CS since the first beta and is THOROUGHLY bored with the concept... this was depressing. I wouldn't have minded them spending all that time porting CS as long as HL2 had its own multiplayer... even if it was just something basic, like DM.

I'm going to skip CS:S (the beta didn't really interest me for more than the first week of off-and-on play) and go straight into f***ing around with Hammer and/or the SDK to see what kinds of weird shit I can do.

NOTE: This is not meant to show disappointment in HL2. I'm just not as excited as I was before.

most people never said hl2 is a let down..most have said they are disappointed there is no hl2dm ..i love dm (d3/hldm/ag)
i hate cs with a passion and i refuse to play it
now what bothers me is the fact that even if half the world plays cs: s there is still another half that doesn't want to play it
they want something different and hl2dm could have been it

the sp may be amazing but thats not what i buy my games for
as i said..disappointed i've waited this long to have to wait longer on someone to mod in something that IN MY OPINION should have been there to begin with

yea many people are going to be confused as to why CS:S is hl2 mp. i mean say 1 guy is playing it sp, then 3 of his friends come over, and one says, hey that looks cool, can we play each other in that?

Wow, a hl2 themed multiplayer that NOONE WOULD PLAY ANYWAY. hl2dm? please, ud play it for a few days and then wait for a mod to come out. u guys are unbelievable. so many good things came from that interview and u guys are crying over one that isnt that big of a surprise or deal.

Amazing how you know what my playing habits would be with HL2 mp. Actually, I'd play a HL2-themed multiplayer mode a shitload, just like I did (and still do) with regular HL deathmatch.

Personally, I'm shocked that there are people trying to defend this. It's one thing to say, "Well it sucks but I'm not a fan of deathmatch/whatever else so I'll just play CS:S", but you're actively trying to defend such a poor decision, not only that but you are trying to defend it by assuming our play habits. That is being a fanboy. Please stop.

Im sorry my opinion makes you cry *hugs*
however Hl2 is probably still going to be a fantastic game, I was gearing my let-down statement more towards "Doom3" and "farcry", as well as "Deus Ex2" "ThiefS", "Fable" and some others that I dont care to remember right now.

I meant it has been a bad year for gaming.
lots of missed opportunities.
SP can be brilliant, and you can love every second of it.. but its the MP that will carry you for the next couple years..... and although CS:S may be fantastic to some, it is abyssmal to me.
I sincerely loathe CS, I may like CS:S for short spurts, but merely because Im psyched up about the source engine in general.. not the actual game.

and I didnt want HL2DM (although I would have happily settled for that over cs). I was kinda expecting something new and innovative, or at least something that took advantage of Hl2's Main features.. you know stuff like physics and vehicles.


for all you people that can't understand the frustration, perhaps you didnt follow the hl2 story as closely as the rest of us, maybe you havent been here every day discussing what Hl2dm will be like, what shit we would be able to pull off etc...
or maybe you just can stomache CS more than the rest of us, who have had our fill of "Counter-Terrorists win!"..

imagine if the mod that it was coming out with, was something you didnt like.. say it was Ricochet:source.... perhaps R:S had a huge player base, and a lot of people liked it.. but its not what you expected given the statements made by the people at valve....


hope that puts things into perspective for you.
if not, simply realize people are different, have different tastes.. and they have the right to vocalize those opinions.. especially on an internet forum.
