What does the Combine want on Earth?

So much that they would go to the trouble to conquer the planet?

The biological diversity to incorporate into their Combine, granted.

But what in the way of resources? If all the Combine wanted was the biological bits and peices that they can pick off of Earth, they would have abducted (hehehe), the various samples that they wanted and left.

Why would they want to go to the trouble of completely conquering Earth?

Something has to be keeping them here that they want.

Water? They seem to be draining Earth of its water supply, and water has characteristics that nothing else currently in existence does.

Also, in all the Combine technology seen thus far, water has not been extremely taken advantage of.

I admit that it is not very likely. Then again, we do not know the biological processes of the original combine. Maybe they do not need water, or it did not exist in the universe from whence they came.

I am just confused as to why they are draining the water. Why?

Also, why are they still here? What do they want?
 
I think in one of the early drafts of the Half-Life 2 storyline, the water draining was emphasized a lot more. I'm wondering if Earth was just a strategic target because of its connection to Xen, and then the Combine discovered the benefits of choosing Earth.
 
They took over Earth and by the time HL2 starts, they're merely inhabitting it. As of now, they are continuing a fight and not simply running away because of two reasons:

1) Running away would be a sign that the combine only conquer planets because they need to, and that once the planet is defeated then they are just fine with being shoo'ed off it by anybody (even by just a few rebells on the planet).

2) They still need the teleporting technology. They almost completely had it and they'll probably stop at nothing to get it.
 
The Combine conquer planets and assimilate races, devouring the resources as they go. With the Earth, they managed to bring it to its knees in about 7 hours. If it weren't for Breen they'd have carried on until there was nothing left to fight. However, they tried a new approach - with Breen’s promise of adaptable technology (local teleportation tech for one) and the ability to transform the remainder of the human race into the Overwatch, and immortal slaves - Stalkers.

Sure, they are interested in the planets resources but their main focus is the local teleportation technology because quite frankly, the Combine are shitty teleporters. They can manage to go from one universe to another (using an absolute boat load of precious Dark energy in the process), but they can't go from one small span to another.

Ultimately, they didn't go through much trouble to conquer Earth. The rift attracted them, and we probably opened up a gateway for them to Xen, where they could finish off the Nihilanth and his refugee band (easy stuff - Gordon paved the way for them).

In a nutshell:

Absorption of Earths resources
Possible alteration of the planets atmosphere
Assimilation of the human race
Technology - or more specifically, local teleportation technology.
And possibly more yet to come to our attention..
 
The combine obviously want to enslave us so that they can use us for labour and if they need to eat our brains for some reason. :monkee:
 
It's also possible that they are even more interested in assimilating humans now, seeing as how we did drive them from earth (something we can assume isn't exactly common), and even though they can come back, we did put a hurt on them. Might impress them.
The big enchilada is still the local teleport tech though, as Samon said.

Who says the Combine arn't at war with someone else? Earth is just a planet, the Combine really don't care about it.

You really think the combine are trying here? Lets take a look at one they've done:
They have launched Earth into a Civil War. They take humans and made there brains all screwed up. Eventually Rebels Rise and Kill Combine. Humans are just killing humans. Throw in Striders and Gunships.

All Combine are doing is using Earths Resources to kill off Humans. They are also intrested in our brains as we solved local teleportation. So obviously they do want the smart people to think and design.

Another thing here would be testing out basic strategies. I mean before WW2, Italy and Germany sent there troops to intervene with the Spanish Civil War. This allowed them to test there new technology, generals, strategies, etc... They may have figured that Earth would get pushed into a Civil War. Maybe this is them just testing a strategy.
 
For all we know, the Combine are a Third World country by interdimensional empire standards. And we're on the same level as cave men.

You really think the Combine couldn't deliberately crush Gordon Freeman? I really don't think so.
 
As Samon said, they must be quite interested on the local teleportation technology.

Resources, assimilation of knowledge and a outpost in the milky way.
 
they know we got some good tech so they want to incorporate that into their own empire much like America took technology from Germany during WW2.

Gordon's resiliant! You can send your entire army at him one at a time or in small groups and he'll just hide behind the infinite rocket crate so he can pick them off as they come and drop new health for him. He truly is unstoppable.
