What I don't get is: Will this HDR be available...

...for the whole game whenever there is lighting FX involved or will it be only on specific maps?

And mod makers can include this into their work?

I think it's not applicable to normal maps because they currently use other ways to fake HDR blooms, like sprites. Same goes for the 'light at the end of the tunnel'. I think a combination of HDR blooms and sprites would be bad looking.

They're demonstrating it when the release the HL2 level and then adding it as a Source engine feature later on.

I thought that the Source Engine was already, in its current state, able do HDR like it demonstrated in that one Bink video.

guh.. ? I think Dumb Dude is right. they where able to apply a HDR test to the rooftops.. that would mean HL2.. every game that runs on source is HDR compatable , it just wasnt enabled for intial release, if someone can find that HDRR video test they released it's most likely exactley what it will look like.

Even if my graphics card could accomplish the requirements, I would still have to wait until I get more RAM, I've only gt like 244MB Free most of the time and that means I have to wait for HL2 to load up 6 times as longer as usual as I have let my mate borrow 256MB for the moment (Norton, Steam running in the background) I would proberbly disable Norton when Im in the game. But either way, I'll be getting 1GB PC3200 next week, so "Bobs your uncle"

If HDR doesn't work on my comp, and is added to the Source engine, would that mean HDR will be in HL3, meaning loads of people will have to update? Or will HDR be an option in the advance display menu?

HDR will be the least of your troubles in HL3. Assuming its coming in at least a couple of years, everyone will have to upgrade.

i think HDR will be added later as a console command, that's what they did with Farcry

The HDR demo for HL2 was done on a 9800, it was ages ago, I bet its no where near as frame rate diminishing as people think,, i get 35-45 fps on average, on full settings at the moment with a 9600 XT. HDR will drain that depending on the multisampling settings and what not, HDR still looks great on lower settings 2x multisampling ,etc, as a few HDR demo's show, i can imagine it would set most people back 5 - 10 fps that way, hopefully HDR will come with a heap of options, so you can get the best performance out of it.

I would like to see the HDR in effect... *drools uncontrollably* :P

Or that you could add it in the video meny.

So you're saying the HDR on Source will *run* on ATI 9600XT and above (I have a 9800XT)?
I wonder where vAlve will draw the line...

Thanks.
