Looking through one of the threads here (The one about some students taking a trip to Valve), I saw something in one of the photos they posted, attached below.

What is that? I've seen it in some Sven Co-op maps, and on Neil Manke's mod, USS Darkstar. Does anyone know why it's on a piece of HL2 concept art?

Wow, good eye.

That model was included in the .pak file for Half-Life, and at one point was probably intended to appear in the game (like the chumtoad and the heavy-weapons grunt, which have been co-opted by Sven Coop) but was cut for some reason. I wonder if they're resurrecting it for Half-Life 2?

And here's a screen of what looks like the same thing in USS Darkstar:

Ah, thanks for enlightening me. :)

If you've get Jed's Model Viewer you can go through the pak's and look at the other non included models.

That slug thing with the big head is known as a 'Kingpin', I think. It was supposed to have super-psychic powers, and be resistant to projectile weapons, or something. Ohh, and its claws were supposed to click on the floor as it slithered, in a creepy way.

The other thing is a 'Mr. Friendly' as far as I know. It was supposed to be some sort of herbivorous, cattle-like Xen creature that didn't do much, from what I read.

I'm pretty sure Mr. Friendly was supposed to help you out. Gave you health or something, wasn't it?

 If this "kingpin" is going to be in HL2 , I would piss my pants..

Mr looks more like a Mrs with those saggy tits.

Errr, wasn't this already seen in the original HL2 concept art? Ehh, maybe it was the other alien guy...

And if it wasn't, I have reason to believe that it's not HL2 art at all!
It's VALVe studios, not Half-Life 2 studios, so everything in there isn't hl2...

I ramble.

Mr. Friendly reminds me of those one enemies in Diablo 2

The Flesh monster guys. The ones that the "Flesh Spawners" spit out at you in Act 4 in Hell. hehe.

Hope they put these ****ing bitches in the mother****ing HL2

Those 'tits' are actually its legs. It's very, veeery slow moving, and in the extract I read about them, if you kept them well fed (on second thought, they did eat meat, but they were more of a carrion-eating creature) they'd screech when they thought you were in danger.

I admit, the Kingpin is definately a frightening badass. Considering you had to crowbar it, due to a resistance to projectiles...oooh.

carrion!?!?!? thats creepy as hell!!! where did you read that though Angry Lawyer??

I have no idea, to be honest. I think it was when I was experimenting with the HL1 code, trying to make an RTS, and thought - 'Hmm, Mr. Friendly and Kingpin would enjoy being on the Xen team', and decided that if I'm going to code them in, I needed to know more about them. I spent a few hours on a search engine, and came out with a load of things like 'Why was Mr. Friendly omitted??!?', and a Valve person saying - 'he wasn't very exciting' and describing what he was. I think the Friendly was part of the original concept of Half-Life simulating real ecosystems - they sat at the bottom, eating the dead. All the information I know about the Kingpin was from an old piece of annotated concept art that I found - it had two sentences of text, something like:

'Massive head for psychic brain - four eyes at 90' to each other to give 360 vision - immune to projectile weaponry due to psychic shield. Claw-like feet click on stepping.'

Oh, and the original design had him has a tripod - the one that you see in the pictures above had the third leg replaced with a snail foot.

Edit: Just thought I'd post some references.

check out the bug thing to the left of it.. there are two pictures of that bug, also there is that tentacle picture under the kingping dude, i bet that goes with the kingping dude much like the one underneath the left pic goes with the one above it.. so.. we see the tentacles in that 2003 vid, i bet those are kingpings, and since they are psychic, they wouldn't need to be seeing the enemy, therefor they are able to kill that combine with they tail and pull him down so they can eat him or whatever..

I'm pretty sure that the Kingpins weren't originally meant to be made of water. Plus, the tail is meant to be more of a slug's pseudofoot thing, rather than an actual tentacle. And the Kingpin looks like it doesn't have much in the teeth depatment. But, then again, I've been proven wrong before.

I hope we see some of the "lost Creatures" of HL in HL2.

Is it just me, or does Mr Friendly look like a distant relative of the Headcrab?

Mr. Friendly, the Headcrab, and the Gonarch all shared the same artist, hence the reason they look so different from most other Xenofauna, but still look alike. I think.

how about a "Deleted Scenes + Levels + enemies" disc.. ??
that would actually be a pretty neat extra for the Collectors Edition along with whatever else they put in. :)

hmmmm

Yeah, something like CS: Condition 0 ....

So, anyone want to make a petition to get the Kingpin included in Half-Life 2? Granted, we'd be delaying the game a little more, but still, we're talking about the Kingpin here!!

I would expect to see it, so a petition isn't necessary.
Why else would they put a picture of an useless guy right in the middle of a bunch of HL2 concepts on display?

Similar reason to the fact I have a Jon Bon Jovi autograph in my hallway. It just looks good.

-Angry Lawyer

The kingpin looks weird, but... what is this? I know, I should've posted a pic but I didn't. Remember when you burn the green tentacles and then you have to go through a hole to continue HL? OK. After falling inside a "pool," you look around, and there's something HUGE and GREEN. It isn't Shrek. If you have the pak explorer or a similar tool, check it out. The model name is "base.mdl."

Hmm... "base." Maybe the "base" for the tentacles...?

You got it right in one there. That's the very heart of the plant. If you look carefully, you can see three stumps where the tentacle models would actually latch on to.
