what made Half Life the best game?

What do you think made Half Life a great game, the playability or in how versatile the game engine was? Don;t get me wrong, the game is a very good one. Yet, some great mods came out of it too.

That being said, do you think HL2 will become a better game because of the following with the original game, or the following with TFC2, CS2, and upcoming mods?

I think the biggest thing was the large mod community and Valve's great job at making modding as easy as possible. With all the mods it kinda refused to let go and be forgotten and made people want to go back to the single player.

Plus the single player has almost no low points (a few jumping puzzles excluded) and for a first person shooter has a lot of veriety. (although if you are looking for a game that you can play 10 times each time playing the game in a totally different way try Knights of the Old Republic).
