A quick search for Half Life 2 revealed thousands of seeds and leaches...
Umm.

They are already pirating this game and it only came out a couple of days ago. Is it because it does not use any copy-protection scheme?

Oh yeah, before you accuse me of being a pirate, I already bought a copy of the game.

Okay, welcome to 2002 buddy. ALL games are copied and released on the net on the same day if not a few days BEFORE they are released. If Ep1 held out until today that's a HUGE victory!

even the ones that are unplayable because of copy-protection schemes?

Those games do not exist. Copy-protection schemes are "un-schemed" in a matter of hours. HL2 came close with AI bugs in cracked versions, but even those are easily solved. The godfather had problems at first but within a day all bugs related to pirated versions were fixed.

i already opened my copy of Episode One so it's not like I can return it to the store. Oh well :(

So you would download it illegally if you could is what you're saying?

I am saying that it is not fair that I paid $20 for it while thousand others got it for free.

So "yes".

I for one am proud to support VALVe. I would/will/never have downloaded a game illegally from VALVe.

Don't you think Valve deserve to be paid to provide a high quality product? I do.

So you would have downloaded the game illegally, if it was from a company not of your liking?

It's really not fair that thousands of people are stealing a game that Valve's worked hard on over the past 18 months.

It's worth supporting them for.

What a stupid line of thinking!

"Oh man thousands of cars get stolen a year, why can't I have mine for free"

If everybody got the game for free, Valve would not exsist.

yeah but Gabe has lots of $$$ ha ha ha

But only because people have Paid for the products he provides. If no one paid Valve for creating these games and other software, then there would be no source of income, and therefore, Valve would not exist ;)

... Yes, stealing is good if they have lots of money ...

If Valve games start costing more to develop then they bring in Valve will cease to exsist.

Those who download VALVe games are shitheads. I really hope they die. No, really.

Yes. Which is why I downloaded the godfather. However, a company which produces fine, high-quality games is likely to become a company I like and thusly endorse. Companies that buy up other companies and force them to spit out soulless sequels, that don't pay their empolyees properly and are generally greedy sons of bitches, deserve to have their money taken from them.

Piracy is the bane of the industry.

I don't care the company, the product or whatever, but piracy is just wrong.

I'm sure probably a lot of people on these boards have illegal copies of Windows... The line of thinking is probably the same as what the other guy said earlier "They have enough money, one person won't hurt them!", but the point is that if everyone does this, Microsoft would go down the drain and Windows would be no-more...

I'm glad you bought the game and you can't return it... What you said was a huge slap in the face to the developer ("I bought it but I want to take it back because you can download it illegally!")

Microsoft survives based on X-box licensing, windows sales to companies not private persons and actually benefit from piracy in several ways. Private persons generally can't afford Windows.

interesting that despite all this discussion the main question was never answered.

Yes, Ep1 has a copy protection scheme. It's called Steam.

Yeah, it is pretty effective, I'd say. I've never actually met someone who pirated a Steam game. Sure, they're out there, but I would think they would require more work than most games.

Regardless, I will NEVER download a Valve game. They've given too much to the community for that.
