What went wrong on 9/30/03 (kind of an essay?)

I've been asking myself a last few weeks about this probably the most notorious HL2 delay in gaming history - how could this happen? I believe this delay is very different apart from all the others because of various reasons:

1. the game was in production for 5 years in total silence, what is unusual, considering that HL1 was such a big success, but none of the media discovered what is going on in the VALVe's offices.

2. on last year's E3, the hell breaks loose out of the blue with the 25 min vid, showing the things to come. What became to good to be true later on was the date - Gabe claimed the game will be released on 30th September 2003, that's less than 6 months! The masses freaked out, of course, being even more encouraged by very good PR work that mostly Gabe was doing. The question follows: how could be Gabe so sure about the 9/30 release to the very last few weeks/days? What made him believe that?

3. The theft. There are some conspiracy theories, but we'll try to avoid them. Gabe has repeatedly said that the game would have been delayed anyway what directs us to the question in the second part. Although, it must have contributed to delay of the game to some extent, but it seems that was not the crucial contributor to the delay. Then what was it? After the stolen build was all over the internet, and playing it myself, it all came clear to me (just a few minutes ago, while writing this :)).

The probable cause of the delay

The stolen build was a copy of a version before E3 version was done. We can see this in the maps from E3, which aren't finished yet. On the contrary, the basic structure of the game had been already set, or in some places even completely done. The game as it was, would have probably been done by the date Gabe's promised. But something went wrong. Gabe was mentioning in August that the final playtesting and tuning of the gameplay is taking place. He said, that they put Gabe's father in front of the computer and made him play HL2 and then asking him, what was fun and what not. The same they did with a lot of people to figure out what the game should be like. But you can't do that with a game in an early phase, when it's buggy crashy and has chess-like textures, right? Gabe said: "Rest assured, if we delay the game, it'll be only to blow your socks off even more when it finally releases." And there's also a Gabe's moto back from HL1: ""C'mon, people, you can't show the player a really big bomb and not let them blow it up." To conclude these facts, the delay is probably because they found out that the tech they made can be used in much more fun ways they could ever imagine.

The primary reason for the delay was to re-writing large portions of the code.

No. While I'm sure they've spent time on those things as well, I believe Gabe when he said that the game, not steam, not the netcode, not security, but the game was not complete to their satisfaction. The source leak was icing on the cake, but the game was already delayed long before the leak was discovered.

Well since it was the only hl2 delay you can hardly call it the most notorious hl2 delay. Heh.

Actualy the game was not finished.

thats why it did not come out.

Valve themselves even said the game would have been delayed regardless of the leak.

this is half life 1 all over again. God, didnt they learn thier lesson already?

That's a rumor. The actual reason given to us by Valve was that the game wasn't finished.

valve is picky.. and thats a damn good thing if you want to create the best first person experience ever

god! I hate these people who just blurt out "its because of the code leak!" IT'S NOT!! Take you mind back to 1st October 2003 - there was NO leak, not for the next few weeks anyway! Although it might have contributed to it being such a long delay, Gabe himself has said that it wouldn't have affected the release even if it had been completed. The simple fact is they were not happy enough with it to release it. The end

but in that post that gabe made in this very forum, says that they got hacked in september 11 2003

Frankly people, it does not matter any more.

Oh and valve did say that they delayed because the game was not finished.

i wonder wtf valve has for us now? it better be good, or else they gonna get bankrupt fast

Valve is picky, the fans are picky but not all is well because the fans are impatient too.

Well not all the fans are impatient, I can wait, although it's not like I have a choice. There isn't a damn chance I'm not buying it.

BTW Valve don't have to worry about going bankrupt, not for the next two years anyway.

Two Things

1) Get over it, it will come out when it comes out.

2) Buy Far Cry the demo looks great and it will take the edge off for another month until HL2.

P.S. WTF is a Bullsquid???

:) Oh, sorry, you're right :D

Well, to the rest of you. If Gabe said: "It just isn't finished!" and: "No, the delay isn't about rewriting the code that's been hacked." and after playing the stolen build, which was about 80% complete then I guess, he meant the gameplay, which could be done much better. In 5 years of production, the Source engine was basically done, you can see that in the build. They didn't know to the very last gameplay tests how exactly they could use the capabilities of the Source, at least that's what I think. That would explain why Gabe was so sure about the 9/30 date. They must have done a huge mistake in gameplay to cancel the release just a few days before the deadline.

Agreed with EVIL. Valve are very, very picky and they can afford to be. They did the same thing with the original, they did the same thing with CS:CZ. It will all be for the good in the end.

Ewww I hate Farcry!
You don't know what a Bullsquid is?!
You know, the spotted dark yellow... squidlike bull thingy, with red... feelers? Haven't you played Half-Life? Or are you one of those CS ALL THE WAYYYY guys?

i got banned from Cstrike for hacking lol... i let the cheats get out of date then i tryed 2 times to get in hahaha and im banned till april 2005 somethin somethin haha? ne ways that game was so thick with H@x0rZ anyways it wassent even worth playing... even VAC and HLguard servers / secure servs where filled with cheats... ne ways im sick of the delays and farcry well... thats a gay game... its better then DX:IW but not as good as doom 3 or HL2 or U3

The delay made them rewrite some of the code....but while doing that they have improved the game. I bet if the game came out in september 2003, it wouldn't have been as good. It's kinda good that they got a delay so they could improve the game.

I am glad they are improving the game, but at some point they just need to say, well, we would like to add x y and z, but we just don't have time.

Otherwise, they will be forever adding, tweaking, etc. Like what has happened to DNF (I am NOT comapring the two)...they switch engines every Unreal generation, lol.

Also, I remember Gabe saying way back that the cutoff date for major changes to the gfx engine was something like the september *before* last years e3....

Nope played through it three times (once on the steam version just for fun), never realized those acid spitting beasts had names.

I know Half-Life 2 will be great. Because when we see glory, Valve sees room for improvement. I remember in some interview or another, Gabe was asked what he saw when he looked at Half-Life 1 and he said something along the lines of "Things that need to be fixed all over the place." Now, Half-Life IS my favourite game, I don't see any room for improvement (Graphics don't count for gameplay.) but somehow Valve does. Gabe said the EXACT same thing when he was asked what he saw when he watched the Half-Life 2 bink videos. I believe that "Things that need to be fixed..." is what these 7 past months have been.

The only coding that had to be really remade is, by my opinion, optimising DX9 for nVIDIA, because most of the gamers have their GFX cards. They just couldn't afford to promise that kind of graphics and then nobody could have it. But still I think that the gameplay was the main reason. All the rest just summed up on that.
