Which video card...

I am soon going to buy a new computer and I am thinking of which video card I should buy, the new x800 or ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb?

I do have budget issues however, could anyone point me to where I can get the biggest bang for the buck. BTW i am happy with 35-50 fps at 1024x768.

If you're happy with that sort of spec (35-50 fps at 1024x768) then there'll be no need to buy anything more than the 9800 pro. If you want something that's gonna last you longer and give you a better performance (more like 60-80fps at 1024x768) then I recommend you go for the x800 but you've got to bare in mind that that's the more expensive option.

The X800 pro MSRP is $400 while the X800XT Platinum Edition is expected to be $500.

and the 9800 pro is £150 pounds.

get the 9800.

its way cheaper and you wont realy notice any difference between the two in HL2.

in future games you will but even then the 9800 pro is still a cracker of a card.

I read somewhere that the computer that ran last years E3 movie of HL2 was a 2.8ghz P-iv with a 9800 pro 128mb, however I don't know if this is true. What was the res and fps on that video... could anyone tell me?

it was most likely something around that spec, because that was basically the best hardware around at the time.

Once the X800 is out, the prices on the 9800Pro and the XT are going WAY down. This is the perfect time for a Half life 2 fan to buy hardware that wont burn a hole in their pocket, but still give them an awesome experience.

thanks for the advice Triggerhappy, I would not have thought to wait until the x800 is coming out, however I need this computer for work purposes as well and so I will need to buy it early summer, when is the date for the x800 ?

The X800 Pro should be out next week, if I recall. Or this week.

As a side note, does anyone else hate that damn name? "X800." Jeez they should've just kept the R420 codename, IMO. Heh, at least it would've been very marketable to stoners. Just sounds better anyway. Saying, "Ex eight hundred ex-tee" sounds redundant and stupid to me.

If your budget is an issue, definitly go with the 9800 pro because the x800 just came out and you won't find it for cheaper then 400. the 9800 pro can be had for $200 and it should do just fine with HL2. Search around online. I recommend newegg.com. Good luck.

I agree. Every company nowadays feels like they have to throw in an X somewhere along the name to appeal to the younger audience. Nvidia is doing the same. You can find in just about every kind of product. ie Doritos Xtreme and so on. I personally hate it. It has become very generic and repetitive.

i thought X800 was the temporary name until they decided on the full name of the series....

Well the X is 10 in roman numerals, and the previous series was the 9(000) series. This new series is technically the 10(000) series.....so at least they have logical reason for using X.

Personally i wouldn't care if it was called Pink turkey monkey barrel 340555. If the benchmarks were great i'd buy it.
