Why can't I get Options?

I got HL2-DM back when it came out, but I've never played it. Why? Because whenever I click on Options it freezes. I waited a few months hoping a patch would come out and fix it, but it looks like nothing has. Can anybody help me out?

Ah, such a simple answer, yet it makes no sense to me. Can you explain why this works? Just curious.
