Hello everyone something really annoys me at the end of episode one where when Gordon is speeding away from the Citadel it doesn't get at all smaller! Just stays the same size all the time 8=/

Well I reckon Valve haven't worked well on the citadel. Go back to Half Life 2. If your in the Plaza, look towards the citadel - does it look like that can fit a train in?
No, it doesn't. But it does.

Hands down the stupidest thing I have ever read. Thank you.

*flashback to Father Ted*
"You see Dougal, this cow is small...but those cows are far away"

if you dont know how a skybox works in map editing then shut up please.

It doesn't appear to get smaller because it is actually physically expanding at an equal rate to the speed at which you're traveling away from it. You know, because of the core meltdown and all...

This might not really be a factor in the equation....but it is more than a mile tall

It's an optical illusion that when you move quickly, things that are nearby appear to shrink/grow/pass faster than things which are far away.

That and it's fuxing big.

What I meant was, even though it is far away it still does not look right. When your right at the citadel wall, that is better.

And you know this for a fact, where is your proof? :dozey:

I dunno who your addressing but if it's me then actually I do know how a 3d skybox works (It doesn't support perspective scaling) but I was just seeing if anyone else would pick up on it:D

2D skyboxes don't support perspective scaling but 3D skyboxes do...

"The 3D skybox is an extra area constructed by the level designer that is outside the bounds of the gameplay portion of the map. When the map is loaded, Source enlarges the objects in the 3D skybox area and places them outside the boundaries of the current level, between the skybox and the player. This is used to give the appearance of a much wider world out side of your level, without being too expensive on the budget due to the (by default) 1:16 scale."

You really haven't yet noticed that really big things don't get smaller as fast as smaller ones do, right?

Like I said I know about 3skyboxes...duh.

Fist of all, the train is not moving at hundred miles an hour, as it would mean that it essentially goes 160 km/h, and it's definitely not. This speed is reserved for specially designed InterCity trains, and the one in Episode One is a regular commuter train, and a more viable speed would be 80 kilometers per hour, and for the duration of our ride, it would cover only one to two kilometers - hardly enough for a giant structure like the citadel to start becoming smaller.

Yea but it looks cooler, otherwise you would only see a little dot what explodes.

And 3D Skyboxes don't get smaller, it is Valve's fault. They are same size all the time.

Were you born retarded or did you teach yourself it as you got older?

The 3D skybox is an extension of regular playable space, it is rendered in the same way, only with a multiplier of 16 in terms of scale. It is still affected by perspective.

The citadel does get smaller, just only slightly and you are being shaken around and have nothing to compare it against to notice it's on screen size change.

Some people should really be culled at birth to stop retarded questions like this.

Seriously, you posted the thread.

EDIT: "You idiot"? Why the hell do you even come here?

I'm not even going to continue this discussion. :|

Well, my 3D skyboxes always keep same, screw that.

Have you ever been to Paris? If so, have you seen the Arc de Triomphe (screw English for not having a word that's useable)? Then, that's a real world example. It doesn't get bigger until you realise it's as big as it is.
