Will I regret not waiting for the mysterious "Black Box"? (I'm a patient guy)

If you buy the Orange Box, you buy HL2 & Episode 1, which I already own. I know I can give them away (or something), but still I don't really feel like buying a game I already own.

Now, there are quite a few reasons to get the Orange Box now. You get to try TF2 (which I'd love to do), you get the 10% discount, and the price doesn't look like it could get any cheaper anyway. And of course you get Peggle Extreme!!!11

But there's this rumor of a Black Box coming out shortly after the Orange Box release, a pack with only E2, TF and Portal. It must be a little cheaper to make any sense and it would be exactly what I need.

My question: Do you think the Black Box will ever be released? If yes, how long would I have to wait? How much cheaper could they possibly get for 3 full games?

I'm torn apart. Did any of you go through the same dilemma and did you come to any conclusion?

Thanks

Yes, we all read about thirty threads mentionning Doug saying that both HL2 and Ep1 values arent included in the price, which means theyre literally free :rolling:

I got the mysterious black box for free with my video card.

I purchased an XT2900HD and low and behold, on the box was a sticker that said, "Includes The Black Box."

I opened and found a voucher for it. I got TF2, EP2, and Portal for free along with DOD:S which I already had, but I was excited. :D

You don't pay for HL2 and EP1.

Indeed. Where did you learn you have to pay?

Regardless of how much PR there is proclaiming that HL2 and Ep1 are 'free' in the Orange Box, the fact that the Black box was going to retail for $30 suggests that it will be cheaper than the Orange Box if it ever comes into existence.

Black box doesn't exist and it won't be back. The price of TF2, Ep2 and Portal is shown on Steam. If you don't want to pay that, you will not have the game. That's it I'm afraid. Although if you are patient, I'm certain the price will come down for Episode 3 which will probably be close to 2009.

A little optimistic, aren't we? :p

I am sure you will be fine being patient. I decided to pre-order and with as much fun as I am having with TF2 I already feel like I have gotten my $46 dollars worth on the beta alone.

Guess what? I read neither of these threads! :D

I've searched for Black Box and it returned little information. Wrong keywords, I guess.

HL2 and E1 together still are 25$. It seems weird that they just throw them into the pack for zero extra cost.

I read about the Black Box not appearing now has to do with retail stores not wanting to reserve shelf space for 2 different products. That's a weak argument for it to never appear on Steam, though. Maybe under a different name.

I'm a big HL and TF fan, but I'm sure many of you even beat me when it comes to enthusiasm for these games. For you the decision might seem ridiculous, but for me (and possibly a few others) it's quite relevant. I mean those who consider the question ridiculous or blasphemous can save the sarcasm for the FF vs TF2 threads.

Thanks all. I didn't expect any major revelations but if you heard anything on this topic, feel free to post.

in my opinion, valve simply decided 30-40$ was too cheap to sell episode2, portal, and tf2 for so they raised the price, added hl2 and episode 1 for appeasement, and called it the orange box. so i don't think black box is coming back any time soon, if ever.

Whether you have HL2 & Episode 1 or not, this is still a great deal if not one of the best deals a developer/publisher has ever offered.
Team Fortress 2 alone is worth the 45 bucks if u ask me.

I wouldn't say 45 bucks worth, maybe 30..just because it's only Multiplayer. But damn if this isn't one of the most fun games I've ever played.

Did they mention at all when these games will be sold separately?

Was battlefield only 30 bucks because it's only multiplayer?

Marketing. By including HL2 and Ep1 the Orange Box appeals to a wider range of people who will hopefully go on to buy Ep3 later.

I doubt the new Orange Box games will feature in any other packs anytime soon.
