I have an HL2 cd key so I'll be downloading it the second it's out, and every night I have a nightmare where the internet overloads from the copious amounts of people following my lead.. :(

Yeah, I too have a HL2 CD-Key already, i'm hoping to get in fast before the Steam Server Room explodes.

How many people will be downloading HL2 on the first day its released? Think of the bandwidth usage! :O

TRue, but I would buy it in the store. Save hastle. You guys are crazy for wanting to download it. Or not wanting to be seen in public for obvious reasons.

I'm going to buy it in the store, so that there is no chance of corrupt data. And I wont have to wait 24 hours to download it. I think it will be alot quicker just to go to the store.

They did say it would be trickled through a few weeks before so not to cram the servers, so my guess is it'll just be like if everyone removed CS or something then tried to download it at the same time.

Plus they said there were gonna be more content servers put up before the release so i guess it can hold it if most of its been downloaded beforehand.

Steam might crash/overload in the day of the HL2 release.. that's why i prefer getting it retail.

I'm still buying a retail release of the Collector's Edition, buttt i've got a stub here from a 9800 that says I can either get them to mail me out a copy or download it...

I'm going with download, basically so that I can play the game as fast as possible, a broadband connection has its uses! :)

So basically what your saying is that it'll be like Codename Gordon was, you can download the content before-hand and when the release date comes around it'll just sorta activate?

Perhaps Codename Gordon was a test-run of that particular technology, yes, no, maybe, interesting theory Kiwwa but you should go play in traffic, any thoughts? :)

Hi im new here :)

I hope valve put out official torrents of the gcf, 0% chance of overloading then :D

Valve have employed the person that created the BitTorrent system, perhaps something using his adapted system will come into affect; if we aren't using it already that is.

Btw. Welcome.

We'll be preloading a week or more in advance... so that won't happen. The cool thing is you can preload and still buy it from a store... just enter the CD key and you're ready to go!

Steam will crash...I'm certain. Steam already has a hard time coping as soon as they release medium sized patches.

How will it crash? They were using their own servers with those patches. HL2 is on a completely different network. So I don't think will be crashing because the content servers won't be hosed down, limelight servers will, and you will probably see hl2.net maybe down for a day ;)

If steam crashes on release your all screwed anyway, your have to sign into steam to play the game.

or not, just rememebered the offline mode :P gj valve !

they use the bittorrent way to distribute, so there shouldn't be any problems at all by the time HL2 is released (playable, that is).

I'll just be buying the game and drooling over the box, most likely. Wouldn't trust my dial-up connection with HL2 if you gave me a million quid. Well... maybe then.

Section from new Doug Lombardi interview:
7. Computer Games Romania: After its release, many players will hurry to get their copy through Steam first. Can Steam handle such a load?
Doug Lombardi: We're taking several steps to accommodate the demand, and we'll soon find out if our guesstimates were accurate.

Let's hope so, Doug. Or else. :hmph:

I'ma pre-order the collecters edish just in case. But I'm still gonna download it off steam to get it asap - although I heard that the release is synchronised worldwide, I just don't trust britain to get it right. If it's some kind of torrent, all the better, I can help it with my megabits of bandwidth!

If they did it properly they could integrate bittorent on the relese day, steam would download the torrent files and start downloading, while all the normal content servers are set to sup3rseed.

tbh its the only was steam wont crash :dozey:

If I were they I'd put the data to download about 2 weeks before the release. Even if the steam servers then would crash, they'd probably get it and about again before the actual launch. Should some changes be made in the meantime, they can just update it (sa. Guildwars).
On the release-day they could then release some critical files (sa the exe's and some small-sized files) and get you playing!

Wasn't there some type of time-lock on codename:gordon to achieve the same thing? Can anyone fill me in on this?

Personally, I doubt Valve will allow Steam to crash during the HL2 launch. If they have to, they can just pay to pile on more content servers.

They're not gonna attempt their biggest Steam launch ever with the same amount of bandwidth they use to release patches.

And yeh, Codename Gordon was preloaded in its entirety to people, then on release day the downloaded content was decrypted.

Even if they crash, in the beginning we'll all be playing the SP part so who cares :)

Well, I think that no one should buy the game or even play the game.

Joking. lol.
well, anyway I think that HL2 s u c k s alltogether. From the details that I have heard from them, the game doesn't support many things that I would like it to support.
The good thing is that steam would allow us to get updates. but, what about the CD???
Can they let us download a new CD off them with the new stuff? A nice ISO file.
I really hope that someone gets the CD on bittorrent ASAP when the game comes out so I can have the CD to install instead of using steam to play the game.

In fact, lets all get together online and exchange emails/AIMs so we can get the CD out that day. As long as we have a legal CD-key. IT WILL BE LEGAL!
If they try to say it is illegal then they would get soooo sued.

So why are you here then?

1. Run WinRAR.
2. Make a new self extracting multipart archive.
3. Add the HL2 GCF.
4. Set it to fit to 650/700mb cds.
5. Set compression to max/Get a lot of cds.
6. Burn.

Sorted.

Whether you have a key for HL2 or not is irrelevant.

Copyright. Isn't it a wonderful word? Now what does it mean? Oh yes, your right to copy. Or, in this case, your complete lack of right to copy.

Blablabla...

Hey jackass if you don't like HL2 then don't come posting here, you're deliberately trolling.

Para, far be it from me to accuse you of misquoting, but.. :P

If I download HL2 off steam with my cd key, will I still be able to redeem my coupon for a physical copy of the game?

The fact is if the game does hog up steam users can create torrents of the GCF files and put the on the bitTorrent network. It is after all legal, and would help steam.

Its not legal, because most of the time it isn't the gcf files its all the individual files.
