You'd think yes, but I'm wondering, lets say you pre-load HL2 and decide to buy it via steam. it will go into the steam account. If you then decide you also want to buy a regular in store CD copy, could you install it in the same steam account as the downloaded one since they'll have different CD-keys? Or would the second one have to go into a new steam account that you can set up with the new game?

Also, can you install the game outside of the steam universe? Like say if you cared nothing about updates or multiplayer and want it isolated on your computer, could you do it so you could play if you have NO internet connection whatsoever in your house? These are just curiosities and not a real situation as far as I'm concerned, but it could be for others, especially regarding limmited net access.

I already severely dislike one thing about steam. If steam $@##s up, you cannot even play single player games, you have to play on the old traditional install if you even still have it. It just seems so ****ing stupid to rely on the online aspect to play the offline main game. So I'm hoping you'll be able to actually play the damn game without being online on the steam network!

So wait...you want to have two copies of Half-Life 2, and install both at the same time? That's generally a bad idea for any game. Why even bother when you have your Steam copy already?

Heh, the steam "universe". No, it HAS to be on Steam.

You know, there IS an offline mode. :P

Yes offline mode is a good thing.

Second cd-key has to go into a different account. You can't register 2 cd-keys for the same game in one account.

Really a useless thread, it is just to look in to steams basic settings and you will find all answers.:sniper:

hello? There's a steam offline mode. :frog:

well I'm glad. I've never really had a problem with it personally since i have pretty reliable DSL. these are just what if's and things i've been curious about. I don't want to install two copies, i'm just curious because its two differnet formats. So when you install hl2 that has Steam integrated, is it going to ask us for our account info as part of the setup?

I figured it would be like cz, where when you installed straight from the cd it would be a standalone game without any need for steam, but if you wanted to play online you should have to install steam.

(Source in) HL2 uses Steam as the interface for menus. The console is also the same as in hl1 steam games. And as far as I know, you can play singleplayer games (like I played OpFor today) on Steam with no problems. The only thing bothering me is that when loading a new map, it connects to Valves server or something.
