Ok a couple weeks ago my house was robbed and several things were stolen, including my halflife 2 discs. I was wondering, if I download hl2 through some bit torrent site or something and use my legal steam account would that be legal?

Even though Im dling it through an illegal source, I did buy the game and have rights to it.

Yes that would be illegal, since the torrent HL2 is "Cracked". You can download Steam from here http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=getsteamnow , log into your account and then download the entire game through Steam.

Just download though Steam, and when you're done, backup all the GCF files to a DVD.

Downloading the GCF files only over Bittorrent is legal, but a full cracked game isn't.

although I cannot see any point in downloading from bittorrent when Steam does pausing and the works...

using steam will be a bit slower but its there for this and will keep you out of hot water not to mention anything can happin and your download wont have to be restarted or stall cuz no ones seeding etc
