This seemingly simple object is actually quite tough. What is the best way to go about modeling a tree? I was thinking use polygonal modeling for the branches, but i have no idea on how to make leaves. Any ideas? Tutorials, walkthroughs, etc would be nice.

Polygonal modelling would be a good start for the trunk, and then, to keep the rest of the polys down on the leaves, I would just use planes, placing them based on type of tree you want to create. i.e. interwoven, or just around the outside of all the branches, then you can texture the planes with an appropiate texture of leaves..this is the simple, crappy way. I would use this way if you're going to be using the trees on MP maps..

Flat planes for sections of leaves/twigs, with alpha mapping and textures.

decompile a couple of trees from css and take a look at them. and note that they use many lod models for the further away you are to the tree.
