The parasitic jewel wasp uses a venom injected directly into a cockroach's brain to inhibit its victim's free will, scientists have discovered.

Unable to fight back, the "zombie" cockroach can be pulled into the wasp's underground lair, where an egg is laid in its abdomen. The larva later hatches and eats the still living but incapacitated cockroach from the inside out.

:O

It's stunned basically... so what? Lamest zombie story ever! Now... if the venom caused the zombified cockroaches to bring other cockroaches to the wasps lair, that would be cool and something worth reading!

Old as hell. Where do you think the chest burster idea came from in Aliens?

does that venom work on humans?

What does it matter? We have far more potent chemicals that can do the same thing and more.

Ever heard of that one that can paralyze the human body, making it appear as if it's dead, but the person is still alive?

yep, known stuff.

edit: regarding OP

they use the antenas to control it's movements. It's like the headcrab in the insect world.

zombie enough for me

The study recently appeared in the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Don't give me a lecture on posting addictions. We're not even in the same league.

EDIT: LOL. Never seen that clip from Aliens. In fact, I never could be bothered to watch Aliens. I see where that paper bag image came from now in the paper bag thread.

you people are missing the point of the news article. it isnt about chest bursting but rather that the

...wasp uses a venom injected directly into a cockroach's brain to inhibit its victim's free will, scientists have discovered.

which is why the thread is titled "Zombie cockroaches from hell" not "Chest Bursting wasps from hell"

BUT I LOVED THE HL2.NET COMIC

*Cries*

Well about zombie cockroaches, it'll be cool if there were giant wasp that could zombify you.

Or not..

Edit

Raziaar, there is no type of cordyceps that can zombify humans btw. As AFAIK its a herb that most chinese people take.

Now THIS is some scary shit if it could affect the human population. Not insects, but fungal spores.
Epic , ****ing epic video that one.

I saw that also and was intrigued old chap! Utterly amazing shit mother****er.

Yeah, I know that... but that doesn't mean a species can't, either eventually naturally or through genetic modification.

You have to take into consideration that the human's biology is incredibly complex compaired to that of an insect.

I doubt we will ever come across a species that would be capable of doing something so complex to us. Viral, animal, or otherwise.

I dunno man... there's already all sorts of complex viruses and diseases and stuff that do some crazy shit to us.

th, am I the only person here who is going to say "awesome, I never knew that"..

AWESOME! I never knew that! Seriously.. :(
