2) I wonder if the doom 3 source will be 'leaked' *smug*
Ive always hated the halflife community, mainly due to the general inability to phrase sentences properly and think coherently. "OMG WALLHAXRORET FCUK OFF YOU CHEAAATARRRED!!!11!!1!!!1!!11! WONID HAXK OMG" ... you get the picture.
However the leak may actually be a good thing for valve in the long run, the game source can be scrutinised. The majority of windows thickos will download the source code and go "wtf where is the WISE SPYWARE INSTALLATION PROGRAM v7.0??", and subsequently delete the offending material.
Personally, I think the halflife 2 gameplay videos look great but I am unsure whether ill buy the game. Even if doom 3 is crap, im going to buy it on principle because iD are doing the right thing by supporting multiple operating systems and not sleeping with Bill Gates.

I can see you aren't familiar with common internet terminology and folklore. Please go back to you "cool crowd".
I don't feel the need to tell anyone who asks the definition of words I use.

I think you may find it nice to know that the elipsis only has three dots. As in: "..."
And at this point, I will cease and decist, because I think this thread should attempt to get back on topic. I find it odd that Gabe didn't send an email to other websites... or post on other forums or something, but rather, selected this individual site.

Well, I know everyone is up in arms about this, but lets consider facts. HL2 was delayed, no reason, no explanation, no public message on the website and now we have to do Gabe's dirty work? He worked for M$, so he knows more than we do, he has security logs, he also should realise that he has the most valuable product known to man on the earth at the moment. I'm quite sure his team has the technical acumen to track these people down. He should be able to find which system allowed entry and from what IP address, speak to the ISP, don't ask the community who you've continually let down without an explanation. Why put it on us? You couldn't be fair, or decisive about the delay. Hell, we still don't have a release date, yet, holidays? Well I live in the UK and don't have the same holidays. I haven't got a f*cking clue when it comes out and to be quite honest I'm passed the point of caring now. All we hear is b*llshit, no solid answers and yet you expect us to find a hacker for you? What have you given us in return? How are we supposed to do this? Do we have access to your logs? I don't think so? Face it, it wasn't hacking it was an internal leak, it couldn't be anything else and you know it, Gabe. I have a mate who works in high level internet security and this wouldn't have happened in any company he secured. He may even be able to look at your system and see the hacker. So, what's the reward? Another delayed release date?

honestly guys, u weren't feeling sorry for valve a few hours ago when we didn't know if it was real or fake. u guys just kept on downloading and talkin about it and talkin about it (me too, but i'm not bickering about how the guy who did it should get punished to the fullest extent, blah blah blah). seriously, don't change ur mind and ideas once this "gabe" character says "i need ur help" i think thta's a load of crap, y am i supposed to believe this is the real gabe? and i'm the freakin pope. get off ur damn high horses, and go back to ur damn lives and quit kissin the "gabe's" freakin ass, geez, it's pathetic.

At another forum I heard that too. People were saying that they deserved it, and yes, I do agree they have been dicking around, and pulling the publics leg. But they did not deserve this.Originally posted by [[LuCkY]]

What happened here? Just recently you were all slagging off Gabe and Valve for not living up to their promises.
I don't want to sound out of order but when we asked about the delay. Nothing. When we asked about the benchmark. nothing.
Someone leaks the HL2 source code and now Gabe wants the community's help.
Gabe: why not start with ATi? They have a habit of this thing, ya know, like 'leaking' the Doom 3 Alpha... and sending id a laptop with all of Unreal Warfare's source code on it.
I may sound out of order, I'm just little peeved that we were pretty much ignored when we wanted answers and now you want our help.
1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.
3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
