no offense sandy but this had little to do with alienating a sect of gamers, or anti linux fumes, or money moves. But more to do with shader use and material abilities.

HLSL allowed you to do more with less. Where as OpenGL allowed you to do less with more, heh.

Just more shader functions in dx9.0 is all. It's really simple, unless, you want to pay for all the lab coats to engineer the shaders in assembly for OpenGL, which i highly doubt heh

Im on it. If i find anything i will let you know Mr.Newell.

Ive always hated the halflife community, mainly due to the general inability to phrase sentences properly and think coherently. "OMG WALLHAXRORET FCUK OFF YOU CHEAAATARRRED!!!11!!1!!!1!!11! WONID HAXK OMG" ... you get the picture.

However the leak may actually be a good thing for valve in the long run, the game source can be scrutinised. The majority of windows thickos will download the source code and go "wtf where is the WISE SPYWARE INSTALLATION PROGRAM v7.0??", and subsequently delete the offending material.

Personally, I think the halflife 2 gameplay videos look great but I am unsure whether ill buy the game. Even if doom 3 is crap, im going to buy it on principle because iD are doing the right thing by supporting multiple operating systems and not sleeping with Bill Gates.

Oh yes, your so wise. It sad when someone has to try and feed their ego in a situation like this. Grow up, then come back and talk to us.

You've got it backwards. I'm the guy who's so absorbed in his computing he forgets to eat.

I think you may find it nice to know that the elipsis only has three dots. As in: "..."

And at this point, I will cease and decist, because I think this thread should attempt to get back on topic. I find it odd that Gabe didn't send an email to other websites... or post on other forums or something, but rather, selected this individual site.

i think you're the one who needs to get out more considering that you have the most posts on this page, and probably the most on this thread, and all the insults on this thread that you took your PRECIOUS time to write is quite sad

Well, I know everyone is up in arms about this, but lets consider facts. HL2 was delayed, no reason, no explanation, no public message on the website and now we have to do Gabe's dirty work? He worked for M$, so he knows more than we do, he has security logs, he also should realise that he has the most valuable product known to man on the earth at the moment. I'm quite sure his team has the technical acumen to track these people down. He should be able to find which system allowed entry and from what IP address, speak to the ISP, don't ask the community who you've continually let down without an explanation. Why put it on us? You couldn't be fair, or decisive about the delay. Hell, we still don't have a release date, yet, holidays? Well I live in the UK and don't have the same holidays. I haven't got a f*cking clue when it comes out and to be quite honest I'm passed the point of caring now. All we hear is b*llshit, no solid answers and yet you expect us to find a hacker for you? What have you given us in return? How are we supposed to do this? Do we have access to your logs? I don't think so? Face it, it wasn't hacking it was an internal leak, it couldn't be anything else and you know it, Gabe. I have a mate who works in high level internet security and this wouldn't have happened in any company he secured. He may even be able to look at your system and see the hacker. So, what's the reward? Another delayed release date?

Very well said. I agree 100 percent. These are my thoughts exactly.

i know it will be out eventully it just pisses me off because the game was delayed so close to the date but i got over it, but now this, and now if its bad as we all think it could mean even more then a year of it being delayed, what if it got leaked some more? oh man id hate to hear half life 2 be declared dead but i doubt that would happen.

Its easy to get pissed off but at the end of the day the guys at Valve have been working for 5 ****ing years on this project and anyone who really knows what this industry is about knows they weren't doing it for the money. Regardless of release dates, poor public relations, benchmark results, what-the-****-ever this is shady, Valve don't deserve this.

Hmmmmmpfh

honestly guys, u weren't feeling sorry for valve a few hours ago when we didn't know if it was real or fake. u guys just kept on downloading and talkin about it and talkin about it (me too, but i'm not bickering about how the guy who did it should get punished to the fullest extent, blah blah blah). seriously, don't change ur mind and ideas once this "gabe" character says "i need ur help" i think thta's a load of crap, y am i supposed to believe this is the real gabe? and i'm the freakin pope. get off ur damn high horses, and go back to ur damn lives and quit kissin the "gabe's" freakin ass, geez, it's pathetic.

Listen I wasn’t bickering about it because I have a social life and was in the pub.

I meant what I said I won’t be attempting to download it and if I do by any remote chance happen on any information about who did steal 5 years of valves work I will be turning it over.

Don’t judge everyone else by your standards.

Several posts on this thread are in the process of being deleted, I'm slowly going through the thread. On the same note, several people have been warned about their attitude.

Having to clear up other peoples crap doesn't put me in the best of moods - if it continues I WILL go on a banning spree without warning.

A seriously fed up D33.

Couldn't agree more. I'll add a bit more to it, though.

Yeah, the missed releases have been great, but that's normal, an expected occurrence in the game industry. Maybe you'll give us a reason to care? Hmm, maybe your marketing plan lends us hope. Oh wait, your marketing plan is the worst thing to ever hit a game, my mistake. "Lets all go pay a great monthly fee for steam, hooray! MAYBE WE'LL GET A NEW SKIN EVERY THREE MONTHS!", and I just love how you will make us re-purchase steam every time we buy another Valve related game. Great, good job, you've made a horrible situation all that much more funny!

I hope the hacker gets off clean, and I'd like to congratulate the people/group that managed to do it. Awesome job, nothing less than what they deserve.

Suck it valve.

Dude this is so bad...;(

What if HL2 is cancelled because of this??? 5 years of work for someone to steal the fu**en CODE?????????!! I THINK IM GONNA BREAK DOWN THIS IS REALLY TERRIBLE!!!
I was expecting this game so much but Im not sure if its coming out now that Valve has been attacked :flame:

This is a work of the  <--
This is really really sh!tty and I hope it gets settled SOMEHOW really fast, but theres probably no way to determine who and how and when, but from what I've been reading, it might be that f@ggot m y g 0 t clan... they can all die, stupid mofos

I came here via Tom's Hardware link. I feel I must state something negative after reading how (possibly) the problem started. You and everyone on this planet should absolutely positively STOP USING OUTLOOK and OUTLOOK EXPRESS!!!!! If you continue to use outlook you are absolute morons and deserve what you get. Try Netscape or Opera or ANYTHING else for email and most viruses/ trojans/ worms will have a hard time spanning the globe as easily as they do.
Enough said.

Security ?

We're leaving our systems' security up to these guys (with Steam) who can't even cover simple security issues? My view of Valve just fell through the floor.

I don't think I can be of much help due to the fact that I don't know anyone firsthand that would've tried to steal the source code...but...if someone posts here about it....I can help you..or if I hear it over mIRC or something...

I hope Valve can get through this ok with no huge delays....and I hope they find the jackass that stole the code and each take turns kicking him/her in the nuts.....

twice...

Have a blast!

Oh, I downloaded the source, too, and we had a look at it at work. Hype, hype, hype - it doesn't even appear to be full. The most interesting fact about it was that there was a copy of PKZip within it, and it was unregistered :D

I *would* post my address, so slAg could send the US Army to invade and carpet bomb me for downloading the file, but I have a little girl, so I'm afraid for her safety - slAg could actually fly in with a visit, and I wouldn't leave a child with an unsupervised slAg alone for a second - especially *mine*.

At another forum I heard that too. People were saying that they deserved it, and yes, I do agree they have been dicking around, and pulling the publics leg. But they did not deserve this.

Bah, I got my hacker on the case looking and downloading all the HL2 source codes.... He will delete them after he checks them out, looking for some kind of info on where/how it was hacked. (some dumb teenager always wants credit)

Danny5: I really feel sorry for you. I hope someone will steal a paycheck worth 5 years from you some day. Write me a PM so i can tell you "you deserved it" some day. Oh i forgot you are a 15 year old kid who doesn't really know what he is talking about, so no paychecks for you soon anyway.

What happened here? Just recently you were all slagging off Gabe and Valve for not living up to their promises.

I don't want to sound out of order but when we asked about the delay. Nothing. When we asked about the benchmark. nothing.

Someone leaks the HL2 source code and now Gabe wants the community's help.

Gabe: why not start with ATi? They have a habit of this thing, ya know, like 'leaking' the Doom 3 Alpha... and sending id a laptop with all of Unreal Warfare's source code on it.

I may sound out of order, I'm just little peeved that we were pretty much ignored when we wanted answers and now you want our help.

Oakey, it doesn’t matter what we thought of the delay. That doesn’t justify stealing 5 years of their work.

Hence the support, I don’t like the way they dealt with the delay. But nor do I like arrogant A-holes hacking into networks to steal other peoples work.

when i was in high school, my gym teacher told me something very simple:

if you dont leave your locker unlocked, or buy a shitty lock, chances are your going to lose whatevers in it

By the way Gabe describes the timeline it appears that these attacks were the reason for the delay and the rest was a cover up:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.

2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.

3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.

4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.

5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

Think about it.
Games typically go gold within a few weeks of the release... and sometimes as little as one business week.
If you take two weeks off of 9/30 you get 9/16... right when all this crap was happening.

What kind of thing could make a developer announce a delay of several months within one week of the scheduled release date?
A security breach on computers that hold copies of the full source code sure could...

It would explain the lack of updates by Valve.
They probably didn't want to alarm the public about the breach until they found out that someone had indeed copied the source code and was going to distribute it.
