I'm looking to upgrade my mobo/CPU and wipe my OS install in the near future. I got my copy of HL2 through steam for free using a key that came with my current video card. Thinking Steam may have a problem with me re-isntalling HL2, I tried to look up and see if there is a specific process I need to follow. I found this info relating to the retail copy, but nothing relating to the free copies from ATI. Still, am I right in seeing that there's essentially a $10 fee to do a reinstall of the retail copy? And has anybody tried a re-install of the free ATI version?

if u wiped ur harddrive then just redl it through steam

Thats if you need to reset your cd key. You can reinstall and play anywhere in the world once you make a account. I have 5 accounts and use them at friends house even in different states etc. You have nothing to worry about.

The game is tied to your Steam account, once you re-install Steam and log in with your account, it will automatically remember that you are allowed those games (or rather, it's supposed to), and open them up for you.

However, should you choose to install via CD, I'm not too sure, but I don't see why they would charge you $10 just to reinstall, that's quite rude.

Phew, good news. Thanks for the peace of mind. Athlon64 here I come!

astryk, you are perfectly fine. Just remember your account name and password and when you login you can click on hl2 and it will download.
