The UK government is to bring in 24 hour drinking. This doesn't mean its compulsory to drink all day and be on a beer-drip all night, just that some places will have a licence to serve alcohol all day & night. Bearing in mind that the legal drinking age over here is 18, do you think 24 hour drinking is a good idea?

yep. some people have night shifts, so going to a oub at 6am shouldnt be a problem. also people can drink at hoem anyway with stocked beer

I don't see it being too much of a problem. It'l mean that a lot of people can drink at their leisure rather than trying to get in as many as possible before closing time. I have oftan been drinking well after closing time, but thats always at home or a friends etc I'm not sure how I personally would react to being able to stay out longer. Its nice to go home and spend a couple of hours there before you go to bed.

I'm not sure. I feel sorry for the poor sods in town who have to put up with wasted people shouting.

Staggered hours might help, though, and I'd rather pubs were open longer. As a regularly gigging musician it's a bitch to finish a set and come out to find there's nowhere to wind down and have a pint.

Is it illegal there to be drunk in public like it is here? IE: You won't be arrested just for having drank in public or anything. But people who are shitfaced and yelling stuff/wandering around the streets will be arrested overnight for disorderly conduct for their and other's safety, and just let out the next morning after they are sober without a charge, maybe a ticket.

Being drunk and disorderly in public is the official charge I think; usually a ride to the station and an official warning after sobering up :D

I do not consume alchohol and live no where near where drunks are a problem, if people wanna drink anytime they can.....
as long as it dosn't effect me i dont care.

I know what you mean, but I am pretty concerned about the effects this law will have on urban people. I'm checking out Ireland right now, and although in less developed areas it's not a problem, there are a lot of reports saying general alchohol-related disturbances have risen.

The strange thing is the police did a complete U-turn on this legislation - first of all they pushed it, and now they're saying it's going to worsen the situation. Hm

Drinking all day and all night...

Tell me where the problem is.

Although I don't really expect the binge-drinking culture to worsen I really don't expect this bill to alleviate the problem either.

It's all down to attitude rather than law- in Belgium they can limit themselves to a social drink, but over here our idiotic youth feel the need to stupefy themselves with alcohol, and I don't think anything will change that.

...what do you mean, monstrously inhumane?

All businesses, pretty much, should have the right open and close whenever they like. The only concern to some extent is noise, if a pub is surrounded by a lot of residential, than it really should not be open after midnight or 11pm.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was getting at - unfortunately many of the spots wanting extended licences will be in urban areas

I'm not sure that NOTHING will change that, but as you said, I'm not sure that this will change it either. I also have this horrible image of some poor sods staying in, drinking 'round the clock.
Oh well, it'll never happen if Howard gets in. That petty, hypocritical, lying, vampire bastard. Ahem.
