512 MB Video Cards

Does it really matter? If 256mb isn't being used to its full potential yet, what makes you think 512mb will?

256 is actually slowing down some cards.

512mg is unnecessary right now.

I am a software developer and I know 512 can be used. But, not in games. It can be used in some projects that I have done.
I am waiting on a 1GB Video card that runs at the same speed as the fastest cards today.
:)

They are coming but it will start pushing the limits of Virtual memory on PCs, with GART and all. 64bit is needed not too far into the future to open up the Virtual memory limitations.

512 unecessary say what brotha!!!!

256MGB cards are used to full potential, and Unreal Engine 3 will choke 256 MGB cards.

Plus all Imaging and Modeling softwares choke 256mg and RAM like crazy.
they use 1000 mbg of mem for the cards and 800000 Kbytes of RAM
6 GHz of Cpu just alone for Imaging softwares.

Isn't there an option in Doom3 where you need 512MB of videocard memory?

Yes but thats more to do with future proofing the engine and not the expectation we will see such cards soon...

Expect them in Q1/Q2 2005

You need to know something, that engine isn't coming out for a year or 2 still.....

I do not el'understand'o....please explain. :o

Virtual memory is limited to 4GB's and 1-2GB's of that is reserved by the OS on 32Bit systems. That leaves the user with 2GB's of virtual memory.

Virtual memory tries to match every address and map it to physical memory. When you add more GFX card memory you are also increasing how much Virtual memory you take up.
Also with larger apeture sizes (GART), they also take up more of that virtual memory addressing space.

Now there is a way to reduce the OS reserve to 1GB but we are very close to hitting the 4GB limit with our 32Bit systems. 64Bit is needed to be able to address above 4GB's. 64Bit isn't about System RAM but Virtual memory.

no.... a 256 MB card is what they recormend if you want the maximum graphics out of the game. So i doubt that it would "choke" it.

is that really true,or is it just something that id has come up with?

512MB of Video memory for Doom3?
no.

no its says it uses 512MB of system memory just for the textures when you select Ultra (highest) Video Setting.

I can run this setting.

I have 1024MB and 256MB video card.

Droom 3 Ultra = Not every texture will render on a 256 meg card.

Ok, I'm not getting into details, but the point was made before. 64 Bit is needed to open up some stuff. Sure, it'd be nice to put Doom 3 entirely on the card. But why? Biggest lag I experience is STILL lag from the HD between texture transitions.

hey Asus, got any links to explain more about Virtual Memory, Physical Memory and Page File?
PF and VM are not really the same are they?
just noticed the link lol

a really really stupid question now: what exactly does bumping mean?
