A small question about video cards

OK, my PC is a intel 2.4 with 512 ram. My vid card is an ATI 9000 pro. I can play CS:source at med settings. Would getting a better card, greatly improve my performance for HL2 or is there no point because of the 2.4 processor. If I should get a new card can you guys and gals suggest one. I just don't want to pay a bunch of money if the card will just give me mild improvements. A new comp isn't in the budget.

u got a nice pc. but as u were saying , your graphics card is in need of a upgrade. I would definatly get a 9800 pro wit 256mg. good onvestment and run pretty much everything on high. I would also deifinatly think about getting another stick of 512 ram.. boosting it up to 1 gig. u might need it.

I'd buy the 9800 PRO (S.E. If i was on a tight budjet. Its a very good all round card

Well thats a load of bollocks...I had a 5700 and it sucked, wouldnt play anything so i dunped Nvidia and switched to ATI. If you want to play games with no worries in regards to GFX, get an x800 pro, might cost a shit load, but who cares? its HL2!!

Get the 9800 Pro. Great card for a good price, ignore the GeForce's; I've had very bad luck with them and they aren't nearly as fast/efficient as the ATIs.

I wouldn't take an ATI card even if it was 20% cheaper. I'd take an ATI card for half price, no more. I have always had great performace for Nvidia cards, since the days when GeForce MX 400 was a great card, and the drivers also were great always. I can get more of my nVidia cards easily through various driver tweaks, they overclock better in my experience.

An interesting observation. People in Doom forums seem to prefer nVidia cards, in HL forums, ATI cards. Yes I know that ID has a deal with nVidia and Valve with ATI, but theoretically, both games should work well with both brands.

The 5700 was horrible and will play the game in DX8 mode.

Make sure you get a DX9 capable card like the 9800 series and up.

Right now in CS:Source the textures flickers like crazy on my 6800, there are white lines everywhere (Link), and with AF there are lines when I walk around (all with the latest "WHQL 66.81 drivers")

I am guessing since it wasn't officially supported on NVIDIA.com its full of bugs - but it runs the stress test fast.

wrong, pg 114 of pc gamer magazine has an interview with Gary McTaggart Valve Software) in which he states the ATI X800 is faster for HL2 by 20%. so in this scenarion, ATI is superior.

This is flat out wrong. While Nvidia's top-of-the line cards are comparable to (even slightly superior to) anything ATI has to offer, their mid-range cards (i.e, the 5700) can't even compete with ATI's midrange cards (9600pro-9800pro) in terms of directx9.0 performance (which is what HL2 uses)

Get a 9800 pro. your a intel 2.4mhz computer would not be able to use the x800 or 6800 that well and the 9800 is better than the 5950 or the 5900. but then again if you are looking for a video card that you can use in the future get a 6800, i love mine.

I personally prefer GeForce's, I got 5800 Ultra atm and its perfect ^^ I can play Source with AA 6x AF 16x All settings as high as they go and resolution 1280x1024 And FPS Is something like 40 all the time. I have never had ATI's so I cant say anything about them, but im gonna stick with GeForce's ^^

Oh there's one minus in 5800 Ultra... The incredibly loud voice... its like vacuum cleaner and it takes two spots at the back of the comp because the hellish big fan on the card, and still it sometimes overheats... but thats nothing too serious... I love my GeForce ^^ *hugs it, and dies because temperature over 1000°C*

Never one to play the spec game I've been quiet about mine, but now I have a question. Mine's a similar sustem (3GHz P4, 9800XT, 120GB HDD... but with 512MB RAM. And I have to say most games look great, but I just wondered how much better things would look with that extra 1/2 gig of RAM. But my upgrade knowledge is limited in this area, but I know certain motherboard have limits for RAM and the speeds they can run at, so here's the question(s):

How can I best tell what motherboard I have (no I didn't build it)? Where can I find out about the optimum RAM configuration once I know what I have? And why do I should like a complete newb when I used to know a lot about PCs?

Sorry for going a little off topic, but yeah, 9800XT's a lot better than people say, but the price sucks ass.

yeah, went from a 64mb Geforce4 ti4200 to an ati Radeon 9800 pro 256mb, really big difference.

1st: I dont know much about dx's included in cards but i got DirectX 9.0c Installed (Its not the same thing as the DX in card right? ^^)

2nd: Had a big lanpartys and played CS:Source on lan, and compare d graphics, well friend of mine got 9800 Pro and he got all settings same as mine (he got 19'' monitor too) And mine game looked nicer... dunno the reason... (he got latest drivers).
Soo... what i can say is: I think 5800 Ultra is better that 9800 Pro

3rd: his max AA was 8x and mine is 6x (he got it full) and mine Anistophic filtering is 16x max and his is 12x i think.. so.. heh

I can only suggest the same as many other people - 9800Pro. A Nvidia 6800 or ATi x800 will be to limited by your machine (=not worth the extra money). If you go for the more expensive cards though, I would not recommend the X800Pro at all. Either you go for a 6800GT or a x800XT (maybe the 6800Ultra).

All in all with a high-end computer and games like HL2 and Doom3, you will get the most FPS/USD with a 6800GT.

An extra 512mb or 1gig of RAM will definitely make a difference, a gig will definitely make a big difference
