Alyx in HL3?

Now I'm sure most of you here have heard/seen Gabe's comment that expresses his love of the idea of featuring Alyx as HL3's playable character. Am I the only person who is utterly repulsed by this idea? Half-Life is about GORDON, not "Gordon and the people that like to tag along" Sure, in an expansion pack - MAYBE it would work, but then, Alyx isn't the quiet, reserved kind of charcter we've come to expect from our HL PCs. Adrian Shephard was as mute as Gordon, and the only reason we know what Barney sounds like is that the Blue Shift Barney had a few hundred clones running around the BMRF... I just don't see the wisecracking, headstrong, emotional Alyx as being appropriate AT ALL, not to mention the idea of having to play the majority of a game with Dog tagging along. Sure, he was cool in his little bits, but to have him as a major feature of the game... *shudder* it just doesn't seem like Half-Life. Besides, how would you explain a small woman's ability to take a sh*tload of lead without dying? Gordon has the HEV, Adrian the military vest, Barney his security guard armour; I'm sure Alyx's breasts wouldn't offer her much protection in that department. I'm sorry, but for me, playing as Alyx would be a serious betrayal of HL's atmosphere - equal to that of a cutscene. Discuss.
EDIT: I don't care how hot she is. One of the things Valve is to be highly commended for in HL2 is having a major female character who wasn't a sex object, no matter how many silly testosterone-fueled fans undressed her with their eyes. The fact that she's good-looking is a thoughtless reason for wanting to play as her (besides, if you were playing her, you'd never SEE her... think about that.)

AFAIK Gabe was speaking 'bout expansion pack, not HL3.
playing as someone else than Gordon would be just unacceptable, given current storyline.
but if VALVe would come up with someting REALLY interresting to explain Alyx (or anybody else) being playable in HL3, then why not.

I wonder if they are browsing thru the forums, picking our opinions and ideas and then brainstorming about story in further games (exps and HL3).
I mean 'look, they think that Alyx cannot be playable in HL3, so lets do it just to surprise the community' stuff

Yeah same here Obsidian, although I dont think he was talking about HL3. Playing Alyx doesnt really seem right, but if they want us to play as Alyx then we're gonna have to. Unless you dont want to play the expansions and just wait for HL3. Playing as Barney or somebody else with armor and vests and stuff might be a little better. Alyx is more better as a teamate, a person who helps you out. I rather play Barney or someone else and still beable to see and help out Alyx.

To get more on topic, playing as Alyx would feel all wrong. The aforementioned 'why can she suck up lead like a two bit hooker?' and 'why isn't she making wisecracks, like she did in HL2?' aspects will pretty much kill the experience for me. Now of course I'll play it, but only to see if they give us any intresting tidbits about Gordon.

It would have to be in a prequel. I stand by the idea that Alyx died at the end of HL2. I think it's possible that Barney survived and some others, but Alyx was right there in the Citadel. Unless the G-man saved her, she's cooked.

You know, as much as I'm against playing Alyx in HL3, I was trying to think up a reason that Valve would even consider taking you out of Gordon's point of view in a non-expansion pack, thus ruining continuity. Then, I thought of this:

We're never taken out of Gordon's eyes, right? Well, what if there's some reason that Gordon's conciousness is placed in Alyx's body? We know host bodies are possible, from the end of HL2 (hence the spoiler tag here); maybe something like that happens?

Of course, keep in mind that I was just trying to think up any reason, and I'm basically pulling this out of my ass. This "theory," if you can call it that, is heading into DC comics explanations, and even I don't believe it. But, it's a possibility. A stupid, stupid possibility.

I only want to play Alyx in an expansion. I'm actually looking forward to it. But I don't want a repeat of Metal Gear Solid 2, where you play Snake for 30 minutes then the whole game afterward is Raiden, who nobody likes or cares about. Snake is the only true hero in MGS. And in Half-Life, Gordon is the only true hero!

Yeah, would be truly fantastic to play as DOG, although a little limiting game design wise..

He has his own in built grav gun beam thing.
He can throw stuff.
He can jump high
His can rip things to pieces

However i dont see how they could get alot of gameplay out of this...might get boring...well i am sure they will think of something

They actually did make one, but it's extremely obscure. It's less than an hour long, a bonus feature you unlock by beating the already-obscure Decay expansion.

But that wouldn't work, because Alyx is constantly in contact with Gordon during the events of HL2. Unless they try to squeeze in an entire expansion in the period of time in which Gordon is off doing his own thing (driving up the highway, running with the resistance, etc), but I don't think that would work either. Rememeber that in HL1's expansions, Shepard and Barney never come into contact with gordon. Shepard sees him jump into the portal, and Barney sees him going to work, and then being dragged into the trash compactor, but that's it. The three storylines never cross paths, it would just be too tricky to pull off.

let's look at blue shift.

it was no problem to play as barney, because he hardly had any personality, he was just another video game character - back then.

today, the situation is different. all the main characters got their own personalities (except gordon, because him = you), and it wouldn't feel right to play as them.
i want to have them around, i dont wanna BE one of them. it would destroy a lot of the character building that was done in hl2.

there are only two possibilities - they have to introduce a completely new character for expansion packs (like shepherd), or continue the story from our (gordons) perspective, instead of repeating it from another one. unfortunately, it is not valves style to CONTINUE the story in expansion packs :x
