I did search the forum but I don't think anyone's come up with this way of tackling the Antlion Boss (Guard?) in 'Urban Flight'. If they have, apologies.

Given the placing of the crates, I guessed that the developers planned this as an option. However, if you fancy trying it, be warned. The software is very 'sensitive' at the point where Alyx moves from the room to the walkway. This is one of the few points where she just spawns in rather than moves realistically within the game. You can be facing her in the room, turn around and she's suddenly on the walkway. And then the game crashes :( .

Very cool, good find.

At first I thought Alyx was down there on the ground and was thinking that you'd have to be careful that she didn't die. But about you saying "the devs planned this as an option", well not really. If there is a possibility of the game crashing I doubt it. Of course, given the boxes they would assume someone would mess around.

Can't view the video (shit computer) but I'm guessing the player jumps onto the ledge that Alyx is on using the large crates - something I tried to do but failed twice and gave up with in favour of trying to charge the thing with my bayonet, missing the key flaw in my plan: specifically, I didn't have a bayonet.

Sorry you can't see the vid. I have trouble with some video sites with my desktop (the laptop's fine). I tried the jump onto the walkway, as well. I think there's an invisible barrier there. The vid actually shows 'Gordon' jumping back into the room from which he originally jumped down.

Interesting...I really preferred my way of getting trampled to within a half inch of death instead, though!

omg the antlion boss was the hardest part of ep1 on hard....on med n easy it was piss
i also tried to get on the ledge...via jumping and moving crates cus i failed killing the antlion boss like 7 times and was gettin peed off by that time lol

in the end i jus lobbed barrels at it
.....the one thing that pisses me off though is i thought the enemy ai was 'clever' ....if theres a big fook off ant lion boss shouldnt they all go for that....instead as soon as i got near one they started attacking me even though i wasnt attacking them....shouldnt they go for the biggest enemy ie the antlion boss...
by not going for it and going for me it made the hard mode so much harder because getting to the barrels was impossible almost without dying

ill liked ur creativity, but ill just stick to throwing barrels at him.

Well, put yourself in the boots of the Overwatch: they're fighting the unstoppable antlion horde; the Citadel, a symbol of the invincibility of their side for as long as they can remember is falling, they've seen hundreds of their own die in just one day.
All of a sudden the One Free Man, Saviour of City 17, indeed of all humanity, the spearhead of the Resistance, the man who killed the ruler of Earth, the man who brought the fight against the alien menace all the way back to Xen, the man who killed hundreds, if not thousands, of their comrades, suddenly appears out of nowhere bearing a shotgun in one hand and death in the other. What would you do? :)

Ah, the stacking of boxes to get to safe cover. I do the exact same thing in the Entanglement chapter of Half-Life 2.

bah its not that hard to fight the antlion guard. I just hop down and run past the antlion guard and the overwatch guys and begin grav gunning the cars over the antlion holes. By the time i'm about done with the second, the antlion guard should be done with the ovewatch. By plugging the holes, the only antlions you'll fight are the ocassasional ones that fly over the gate at the end of the street, which is a lot less than the constant stream from the antlion holes. This lets you concentrate on bringing down the guard. just you and him. mano a mandible

Always cool to see how people did certain things.

That was pretty cool. But I couldn't bother to do that, I can beat it quicker by just rushing down and using barrels and weapons, while still only taking minimal to no damage.

Just rush and spray. ;) I sprinted and jumped to move out of the way of his charging..

I just use the SMG (theres an unlimited ammo crate of the stuff there) while strafing after the explosive barrels are gone. Also, while the soldiers are getting slaughtered I plug the Antlion holes.

I just tried this as it was done in the video - When I jumped back onto the ledge Alyx was still there. She then dissapeared & reappeared on the opposite platform ....... then the game crashed!

I didn't try climbing back into the other room. Good idea!!

I made a few attempts to climb stacked crates up to the catwalk where Alyx is, but there seems to be an invisible barrier. Eventually, the Antlion boss headbutted me while I was climbing and actually threw me up on top of the invisible tunnel covering the catwalk.

As soon as the boss died the invisible barriers disappeared and I fell down onto the catwalk.

Later, I found the following in a nearby commentary bubble.

I don't really understand why Steve Bond has tried to prevent players from reaching an inaccessible perch. I guess I just don't like "forced failure" in game design.

Btw, Alyx appears to spawn just beneath the catwalk and quickly pulls herself up.
