Argh, damn firewall

Crap, I got myself a Netgear router (which will allow my laptop go to the net), but it has a built-in firewall. Now I got myself ABC bittorrent client, and that firewall makes my download much slower (link itself becomes Yellow, what it means, check out FAQ http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/faq.html ). It's annoying, any idea how I can fix ABC downloading speeds without turning firewall off? I don't know, let ABC to by pass it?

i recently bought the DG834G (dunno if it's the same one as yours). it's got an inbuilt firewall too, but i'm not using it as it's a bitch to set the ports up. basically, you've got that little install cd right? stick it in, then when you get that little IE window click on 'settings'... alternatively you just open up an IE window and stick in the ip of your router (http:// 192.168.0.1 by default i think) then you stick in your username and password. once you're in click on 'Services', and add a services, say between the port ranges that your download client takes. to enable incoming traffic on those ports you need to go to 'Firewall Rules' and add the Service as an incoming rule. that should allow your bittorrent downloads to get through the firewall without any fuss.

Firewalls can be a little annoying sometimes, but they protect you from morons who want to hack your computer.

Sorry, I don't really answer your question here, but you could use ZoneAlarm instead, it's very good and it asks every time an unknown program wants to connect to your Internet.

It says "IP Address field is illegal, legal range is 0..255 ! " when I try and add ports 6881 to 6889, which is very annoying. Any idea what to do? Thanks for the help so far.

which point does it say ip is illegal? at the services stage, at the firewall rules stage or the initial getting into the settings stage? i'm assuming it's at the firewall rules stage since that error sounds familiar. you need to add your ip as you see it in the IE bar (attached image). if it still says the same thing then just add a different number on the end of the ip. where it would be eg. 192.168.0.1 , just add a 2 on the end and try again, then a 3, and so on. it should really work the first time.

zonealarm is crap, imo.
i have a D-Link router...and opening the correct ports didn't fix my problem...the BT client was maxing out my upload...which always causes problems.

to fix my situation, i use netlimiter. it lets you throttle your speeds for each program. so you just limit your upload for your BT client and your DL should come back up.

Okay I added ports, but now I can't find Firewall Rules Lol, I am such a newb in this.

that's weird.

you've installed the firewall right? it should be something called FREEDOM Firewall i think? anyway, i think you need to mess around with that because that is the program that is regulating the incoming and outgoings.

the only thing i can think of is that your router doesn't have an inbuilt firewall, hence it doesn't include a Firewall Rules tab, but you've said you just installed the router firewall so that can't be right.

have you tried upgrading the firmware? always a good idea. aside from that just mess around with the FREEDOM Firewall settings. i haven't played around with it myself so i can't really help you that much.


EDIT: also i noticed that you've created a service setting for each port. you don't need to do that. all you need to do is set the start and finish port and it opens the values in between them (attached image).

I have one Netgear Router myself to.. RP614 and it's a BIATCH!!
I hate it cuz it mess up my internet like crashing the connection cuz of the router will ping itself to death when i run applications like BT and DC and so on, even if i've opened up the ports to them!
